Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Naba' (نَبَأُ): News, tidings, or report of a significant event.
- Al-Mu'tafikat (الْمُؤْتَفِكَاتِ): The overturned towns — referring to the cities of the people of Lot (Lut), which were turned upside down as a punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Has the news not reached these hypocrites — and all who reject the truth — of what happened to the nations who came before them? Consider their fate: the people of Nuh (Noah), who were destroyed by the flood after centuries of patient calling and persistent rejection; the people of 'Ad, who were annihilated by a furious, destructive wind because of their arrogance and tyranny; the people of Thamud, who were seized by a mighty blast after they crippled the she-camel, the sign of their prophet; the people of Ibrahim (Abraham), whose tyrant Nimrod was humiliated and destroyed while Ibrahim was saved by his Lord's mercy; the people of Madyan (Midian), the community of Shu'ayb, who were overtaken by the punishment of the Day of the Shadow when they cheated in weights and measures and rejected the call to worship Allah alone; and the overturned towns of the people of Lut, whose cities were raised up and flipped over, pelted with stones of baked clay.
To all of these nations, their messengers came with clear proofs, undeniable miracles, and evident signs. They were not destroyed out of ignorance or injustice — far be it from Allah to wrong anyone. Rather, they were given every chance: warnings were delivered, evidences were shown, and yet they chose to persist in disbelief, arrogance, and sin. Allah did not wrong them in the least; it was they who wronged their own souls. They brought destruction upon themselves through their own choices — by rejecting the truth, mocking the messengers, and persisting in transgression.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation: the patterns of history repeat themselves. Those who reject divine guidance and oppose the messengers of Allah inevitably face the consequences of their actions. The hypocrites of Madinah — and indeed every person who hears this message — are being asked: do you not see what happened to those before you? Will you follow the same path and suffer the same end?
The beauty of this message is that Allah never punishes without warning. He sends messengers, reveals scriptures, and shows signs — all out of His perfect justice and mercy. He gives people time to reflect, repent, and return to Him. The destruction that befell those nations was not a sign of Allah's cruelty, but a testament to His justice — for they were warned, yet they chose to persist in their wrongdoing.
So let this be a call to every soul: the door of repentance is open, the mercy of Allah is vast, and the lessons of history are before you. Do not be among those who wrong themselves, for Allah is ever just, ever merciful — and He loves those who turn back to Him before it is too late.
