Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-A'raab (الأعراب): The Bedouin Arabs, desert dwellers.
- Qurubat (قُرُبَات): Acts of drawing near to Allah; means of seeking His closeness and favor.
- Salawat al-Rasul (صَلَوَاتِ الرَّسُولِ): The supplications and prayers of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After mentioning the hypocrites among the Bedouins who spend their wealth only for show and to avoid being criticized, Allah now turns our attention to the sincere believers among them — and what a beautiful contrast this is! Among these desert dwellers, there are those whose hearts are alive with faith. They truly believe in Allah and in the Last Day — in the resurrection, the reckoning, the scales, Paradise and Hellfire. Their belief is not a mere claim on the tongue; it transforms their actions.
These sincere believers take whatever they spend in the cause of Allah — whether it is charity, supporting the fighters, or contributing to the community — and they treat it as a means of drawing closer to Allah. They do not spend to be seen or praised by people; they spend hoping for Allah's reward and seeking His pleasure. Moreover, they eagerly desire the supplication of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) — they long for him to pray for them and seek forgiveness on their behalf, because they know the immense value of his blessed prayer.
Allah then gives them a glorious confirmation: "Indeed, it is a means of nearness for them." This is a divine testimony affirming the correctness of their intention and the sincerity of their hope. Their spending and their longing for the Prophet's prayer are not wasted — they are accepted and rewarded by Allah.
And then comes the most beautiful promise: "Allah will admit them into His mercy." This is a firm, guaranteed promise — the particle "sa" (will) emphasizes its certainty. Allah's mercy encompasses His forgiveness and His Paradise. He will not only forgive their shortcomings but will also honor them with His eternal mercy and bliss.
Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving — He pardons the sins of those who turn to Him in sincerity — and Most Merciful — He showers His grace and kindness upon His believing servants.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how Allah does not judge people by their appearance or their environment. Even among the desert Bedouins — who were often seen as rough and simple — there were those whose faith surpassed that of many city dwellers. Allah values the sincerity of the heart, not the sophistication of one's lifestyle. This verse teaches us that whatever we have — whether little or much — we can turn it into a means of drawing closer to Allah, if only our intention is pure. And what greater joy is there than to be promised entry into Allah's mercy? Let us train our hearts to spend for Allah's sake, to seek the guidance of His Messenger's example, and to live with the hope of His infinite mercy. For Allah's door of forgiveness is always open, and His mercy embraces all who sincerely seek Him.
