Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿUqbāhā (عُقْبَاهَا): Its consequence, outcome, or repercussion. It refers to the result or aftermath of an action—in this context, the punishment that followed the crime of the Thamūd people.
Explanation of the Verse:
After describing how the people of Thamūd rejected their prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him), transgressed all bounds, and slaughtered the she-camel that was a sign from Allah, this verse concludes the narrative with a profound statement about Allah’s absolute sovereignty and power. Allah says: "And He does not fear its consequence."
This means that when Allah Almighty exacted His punishment upon the people of Thamūd—destroying them utterly with a single devastating blast—He did not fear any repercussion, backlash, or accountability for what He did. Unlike human rulers or judges who might hesitate to punish for fear of rebellion, criticism, or consequences, Allah—glorified and exalted be He—is the Absolute Sovereign. He answers to no one. His justice is perfect, His wisdom is complete, and His power is unmatched. There is no authority above Him, no force that could oppose Him, and no one who could call Him to account. When He decrees a punishment, it is carried out with absolute certainty, and no one can question His decision or intervene to stop it.
This verse instills in the believer a profound sense of Allah’s majesty and might. It reassures us that divine justice will always prevail—no tyrant, no oppressor, no transgressor can escape the consequences of their deeds. Just as the Thamūd were destroyed for their arrogance and defiance, so too will every wrongdoer face the justice of Allah, who fears nothing and no one.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this statement. The Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of all worlds, does not fear the outcome of His actions. He is free from all weakness, all hesitation, and all need for approval. This is the God we worship—the One who is truly worthy of our devotion and submission. When you internalize this truth, your heart finds peace in His justice, your soul finds comfort in His wisdom, and your life finds purpose in His worship. So turn to Him with sincerity, obey His commands, and stay far from His prohibitions. For He who does not fear the consequence of His punishment is certainly capable of granting the most magnificent rewards to those who believe and do righteous deeds. Let this verse be a reminder that Allah’s promise is true, His justice is certain, and His mercy is vast for those who seek it. Embrace Islam with a heart full of awe and love, and you will find in it the ultimate success in this life and the Hereafter.
