Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah — glory be to Him — is the One who created the sun as a blazing, brilliant source of light that radiates warmth and brightness during the day, and He created the moon as a softer, gentler light to illuminate the night. He did not create them equal, for each serves a distinct purpose in the cosmic order. The sun marks the days, while the moon was precisely measured with twenty-eight stations or phases, appearing to grow and shrink in a perfect, unbroken cycle. This is so that you, O humanity, may count the years, the months, and the passage of time with ease and accuracy. Through this celestial rhythm, you can organize your worship, your trade, your contracts, and all the affairs of your daily life.
Allah did not create the sun and the moon — nor anything else in the heavens and the earth — without purpose or in vain. Rather, He created them with absolute truth and profound wisdom, as clear evidence of His perfect power, infinite knowledge, and unique oneness. Every movement of these celestial bodies is a sign pointing to its Creator, inviting you to reflect and to know Him.
And Allah explains these signs in detail, making them clear and accessible, for people who possess knowledge and who use their intellect to ponder. Such people are the ones who truly benefit from these signs, for they look beyond the mere spectacle of the cosmos and see the Hand of the Wise Creator behind it all.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look up at the sky on any clear night. See that moon waxing and waning with perfect precision, month after month, year after year, never failing, never delaying. See that sun rising and setting, bringing you warmth and life. This is not a random accident — it is the work of a Merciful Lord who arranged everything for your benefit. He did not need to create these lights for His own sake; He created them for you, so that you may live with order and ease, and so that you may recognize His greatness and turn to Him in gratitude. When you count the years of your life, remember that every passing moment is a gift from Him, and every sign in the heavens is an invitation to know your Creator. Will you not answer that call? Will you not thank the One who lit your path — both in the sky and in your heart — with the light of faith? Indeed, the same Lord who set the sun and moon in their courses has sent you the Qur’an as a guiding light for your soul. Do not let that light pass you by.
