Surah Hud — Verse 19

Word Meanings:

• Yasuddūna (يَصُدُّونَ): They turn away, prevent, or hinder others.
• Sabīl Allāh (سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ): The Path of Allah — meaning His religion of Islam, the straight way of worship and obedience.
• Yabghūnahā ʿiwajan (وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا): They seek for it crookedness — i.e., they desire to make the path deviate from its straightness so that people may find it difficult or unattractive to follow.
• Kāfirūn (كَافِرُونَ): Disbelievers — those who reject the truth and deny the Hereafter.

Tafsir (Explanation):

These are the wrongdoers who actively block others from the straight path of Allah — the path that leads to His worship, His obedience, and ultimately to His pleasure. They do not merely turn away themselves; they go further and strive to prevent others from walking upon it. Their goal is to make this path appear crooked and flawed, to cast doubts and distortions upon it, so that people may abandon it and turn to falsehood. They seek to twist the truth into something unrecognizable, aligning it with their own desires and whims.

Moreover, their corruption is rooted in their denial of the Hereafter. They do not believe in the resurrection, nor in the reckoning, nor in the reward and punishment that await every soul. Because they have no fear of accountability, they feel free to obstruct the truth and mislead others without any restraint. Their disbelief in the afterlife is the very foundation of their arrogance and their relentless war against guidance.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for us: the path of Allah is straight and clear, and no amount of distortion can change its essence. Yet, there will always be those who seek to block it and make it seem crooked. As believers, we must hold firmly to this path, beware of those who try to divert us, and never let their falsehood shake our certainty. For the Hereafter is real, and every soul will stand before its Lord — the blockers and the obstructers will face the very justice they denied.

How beautiful is the path of Allah! It is the path of peace, purpose, and eternal success. Those who try to block it or make it seem crooked are only harming themselves, for they cannot extinguish the light of Allah. Let us walk this path with confidence and invite others to it with wisdom and kindness — for the Hereafter is the true life, and the winners are those who prepare for it well.
