Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ifra (افترى): To invent a lie or fabricate a falsehood.
- Al-Ashhad (الأشهاد): The witnesses; plural of *shahid* (witness). These are the angels, the prophets, and the righteous believers who will bear witness on the Day of Judgment.
- La'nah (لعنة): Being cast away from Allah's mercy; a curse that signifies His wrath and distance.
- Adh-Dhalimin (الظالمين): The wrongdoers; here, specifically those who commit the gravest injustice by lying about Allah.
Tafsir (Explanation):
There is no injustice greater than the one who invents lies against Allah—whether by claiming He has a partner, a son, or by attributing to Him what does not befit His majesty. Such a person has not only wronged himself but has also attempted to distort the very truth about his Creator. This is the peak of transgression, for no sin surpasses the audacity of speaking falsely about the Lord of the heavens and the earth.
On the Day of Judgment, these fabricators will be brought forth and presented before their Lord for the ultimate reckoning. The witnesses—angels, prophets, and the righteous—will then declare: "These are the ones who lied about their Lord." Their lies will be exposed before all of creation, and their shame will be complete. No defense will avail them, and no excuse will be accepted.
Then comes the divine decree: "Indeed, the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers." This is not a mere statement of anger; it is a declaration of their expulsion from Allah's mercy—a mercy that encompasses everything except those who persist in such heinous falsehood. Their punishment is sealed because their injustice became a defining trait of their very being.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the gravity of this verse. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made the path to Him clear and easy. He has sent messengers, revealed scriptures, and given us countless signs—all to guide us to His pleasure. Yet, to lie about Him, to attribute to Him what He is free from, is to slam the door of mercy in one's own face.
How beautiful is the path of truthfulness! The one who speaks truthfully about Allah—acknowledging His oneness, His perfection, and His commandments—opens for himself the gates of Paradise and earns the love of his Lord. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise." (Bukhari & Muslim)
So, hold fast to the truth about Allah. Know Him as He has described Himself in His Book and through His Messenger. Do not let arrogance, ignorance, or blind following lead you to fabricate lies against Him. For on that Day, when the witnesses stand and the truth is unveiled, only those who were truthful in this world will find peace and honor in the presence of their Lord.
May Allah make us among the truthful, and may He protect us from the curse that awaits the wrongdoers. Ameen.
