Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse opens a window into the majesty of Allah’s creation and His profound wisdom behind it. Allah, the Exalted, is the One who created the heavens and the earth—despite their immense vastness and complexity—in six distinct periods. Before this creation, His Throne rested upon the water, a reality that reminds us of His absolute dominion: He existed before all things, and all things came into being by His command alone. There was no helper, no partner, and no prior material—He simply willed, and it was.
But why did Allah create all of this? The verse answers: "To test you—which of you is best in deed." This is the very purpose of our existence in this worldly life. The test is not about who is richest, strongest, or most famous, but about who performs deeds that are most sincere and most aligned with what Allah loves and commands. A deed is "best" when it is done purely for Allah’s sake and in accordance with the guidance of His Messenger (peace be upon him). Every breath you take, every choice you make, and every action you perform is part of this grand examination. The heavens and the earth were created as a stage for this test, and your life is the answer sheet.
Then, the verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly: If you tell these disbelievers, "You will be resurrected after death," they will immediately respond, "This is nothing but clear magic!" They dismiss the Qur’an and the promise of resurrection as mere sorcery, even though the very creation around them—the heavens, the earth, and their own existence—proves that the One who created all of this is fully capable of bringing them back to life. Their denial is not based on evidence but on stubbornness and arrogance.
Dear reader, reflect on this: The same Allah who created the vast universe in six days, who placed His Throne over the water before time itself, is the One who is watching your deeds. He did not create you in vain, and He will not leave you without purpose. The resurrection is not a fantasy—it is a certainty, just as the creation of the heavens and the earth is a certainty. So ask yourself: What have you prepared for that Day? Are your deeds among the "best," done sincerely for Allah and in line with His guidance? Or are they empty of meaning, like the disbelievers who saw the truth and still called it magic?
Let this verse ignite in your heart a sense of purpose. Every moment is an opportunity to excel in good deeds—prayer, kindness, honesty, charity, and seeking knowledge. The One who created the heavens and the earth is watching you with mercy and justice. Do not let the whispers of denial or the distractions of this world turn you away from the ultimate success. Embrace the Qur’an, act upon it, and prepare for the meeting with your Lord, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Just, and His promise is true.
