Word Meanings:
- Aḍghāthu aḥlām (أَضْغَاثُ أَحْلَامٍ): "Aḍghāth" is the plural of "ḍighth," which refers to a bundle of plants or a confused mixture. Here, it means a jumbled, incoherent collection of dreams — visions that are mixed, chaotic, and lacking any clear meaning or consistency.
- Ta’wīl (تَأْوِيل): Interpretation, explanation, or the uncovering of the true meaning and outcome of something, especially dreams.
- Aḥlām (أَحْلَامٍ): The plural of "ḥulm," meaning dreams seen during sleep.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the king presented his troubling dream to the assembled dignitaries and courtiers — the dream of seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain alongside seven dry ones — they were at a loss. They replied dismissively: "This is nothing but a confused jumble of dreams, a chaotic mixture that carries no real message or significance. Such dreams have no valid interpretation, and we are not knowledgeable in interpreting such tangled, false visions."
Their response reveals two things: first, their inability to grasp the meaning of the dream, and second, their arrogance and haste in declaring it meaningless rather than admitting their ignorance with humility. They did not even attempt to reflect deeply or seek guidance. They simply brushed it aside as nonsense, saying, "We are not skilled in interpreting such mixed-up dreams."
This stands in stark contrast to what follows in the story, when Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, is brought forth and provides a clear, accurate interpretation — a sign of the divine knowledge granted to him by Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Humility:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. When faced with matters beyond our knowledge, the honest response is not to dismiss them or claim they are meaningless, but to acknowledge our limitations and seek guidance from those who possess knowledge. The courtiers of the king failed because they closed the door to understanding. How often do we, too, rush to judge what we do not comprehend — whether in matters of faith, life, or the Qur’an itself — simply because we lack the tools to interpret it?
The Qur’an invites us to approach it with an open heart and a humble mind. Its verses are not "a jumble of dreams" or confused words; they are a clear light, a guide to the straight path. When we encounter what we do not understand, let us not turn away in arrogance. Instead, let us turn to those who know, and above all, to Allah, the All-Knowing, who reveals His wisdom to whom He wills. The story of Yusuf reminds us that true knowledge is a gift from Allah, and those who seek it sincerely will find doors opened for them — just as the king’s dream, which seemed impossible to interpret, was ultimately explained with clarity and precision by a servant of Allah.
So, dear reader, do not let confusion lead you to rejection. Let it lead you to inquiry. For in every puzzle, there is a key — and the key to all knowledge is in the hands of Allah, the Most Merciful, who guides whom He loves to the truth.
