Tafsir (Explanation):

The one who had been saved from the two prisoners—the cupbearer of the king—finally remembered Yusuf (peace be upon him) after all those long years. He had forgotten the request Yusuf had made to him to mention his case to the king, but now, at the critical moment when the king and his court were perplexed by a strange and troubling dream, the memory came rushing back. He said to the king and his assembly: "I will inform you of its interpretation—so send me to Yusuf."

This was a moment of divine wisdom unfolding. The cupbearer knew that Yusuf was not merely a prisoner but a man of profound knowledge and God-given insight, capable of interpreting dreams with remarkable accuracy. So he volunteered to go to Yusuf, seeking the truth from him. This shows how Allah had preserved Yusuf's reputation even in prison, and how the very circumstances that seemed like a setback—his imprisonment—became the means by which his rank would be elevated in the eyes of the king and the people of Egypt.

Reflection and Da'wah:

Notice how Allah, in His infinite wisdom, caused the cupbearer to forget Yusuf for years, only to make him remember at the precise moment when it was most needed. This teaches us a profound lesson: never despair when your efforts seem to bear no fruit, and never think that your good deeds are wasted. Allah's timing is perfect. What appears to be a delay is often a preparation for something greater. Yusuf (peace be upon him) did not lose hope; he remained patient and steadfast in his devotion to Allah, and Allah rewarded him in ways he could never have imagined.

For us as Muslims, this story is a reminder that our reliance should always be on Allah alone. When we face trials, we must remember that Allah is the Best of Planners. He may close one door, but He opens another—often better than what we had hoped for. So hold firm to your faith, keep your trust in Allah, and never underestimate the power of patience and prayer. The same Allah who turned Yusuf's prison into a palace can turn your difficulties into blessings.

And [subsequently] the king said, "Indeed, I have seen [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry. O eminent ones, explain to me my vision, if you should interpret visions."

They said, "[It is but] a mixture of false dreams, and we are not learned in the interpretation of dreams."

[He said], "Joseph, O man of truth, explain to us about seven fat cows eaten by seven [that were] lean, and seven green spikes [of grain] and others [that were] dry - that I may return to the people; perhaps they will know [about you]."
[Joseph] said, "You will plant for seven years consecutively; and what you harvest leave in its spikes, except a little from which you will eat.
