Word Meanings:
ʿAdhāb (عَذَابٌ): A painful punishment or torment.
Ashadd / Ashaqq (أَشَقُّ): More severe, harder, or more intense.
Wāqin (وَاقٍ): A protector, defender, or one who shields from harm.
Explanation of the Verse:
For these disbelievers who turn people away from the path of Allah, there is a painful punishment in this worldly life—through defeat, captivity, humiliation, and the consequences of their arrogance and opposition to the truth. This is a foretaste of divine justice that strikes them even before the Hereafter. Yet, the punishment of the Hereafter is far more severe, heavier, and more agonizing—both in its intensity and in its endlessness. It is a torment that pierces the heart and knows no relief. And on that Day, they will find no protector, no defender, and no one who can shield them from the wrath of Allah. Every door of escape will be closed, and every intercessor will be powerless before His decree.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a profound reminder of Allah's absolute justice and the reality of accountability. It calls upon every soul to reflect: if the trials of this world are already hard to bear, how much harder is the punishment that awaits those who persist in disbelief and wrongdoing? Yet, the same verse carries an unspoken invitation—the door of repentance is open before the punishment comes. Allah, in His mercy, warns us in this life so that we may turn back to Him before it is too late. Let this be a moment of awakening: do not wait until the protector is gone and the time for return has passed. Embrace the mercy of Allah now, for He is the Most Forgiving, and His door remains open to all who seek Him sincerely.
And already were [other] messengers ridiculed before you, and I extended the time of those who disbelieved; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.
Then is He who is a maintainer of every soul, [knowing] what it has earned, [like any other]? But to Allah they have attributed partners. Say, "Name them. Or do you inform Him of that which He knows not upon the earth or of what is apparent of speech?" Rather, their [own] plan has been made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they have been averted from the way. And whomever Allah leaves astray - there will be for him no guide.
For them will be punishment in the life of [this] world, and the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe. And they will not have from Allah any protector.
The example of Paradise, which the righteous have been promised, is [that] beneath it rivers flow. Its fruit is lasting, and its shade. That is the consequence for the righteous, and the consequence for the disbelievers is the Fire.
And [the believers among] those to whom We have given the [previous] Scripture rejoice at what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], but among the [opposing] factions are those who deny part of it. Say, "I have only been commanded to worship Allah and not associate [anything] with Him. To Him I invite, and to Him is my return."
