Word Meanings:

  • Qaryah (قرية): A town, city, or community whose inhabitants are disbelievers and rejecters of the messengers.
  • Muhlikūhā (مهلكوها): We will cause its destruction and annihilation.
  • Muʿadhdhibūhā (معذبوها): We will afflict them with punishment.
  • ʿAdhāban shadīdan (عذابًا شديدًا): A severe and painful punishment, such as killing, captivity, or other forms of divine retribution.
  • Masṭūran (مسطورًا): Written and decreed, recorded in the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ).

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah issues a solemn warning to the disbelievers who reject His messengers and persist in their arrogance and sin. He declares that there is not a single town or city of disbelievers — no matter how powerful, wealthy, or fortified — except that He will inevitably bring about its destruction before the Day of Resurrection, or afflict its people with a severe punishment in this worldly life as a consequence of their disbelief and wrongdoing.

This divine decree covers two possibilities: either the complete annihilation of the community through destruction, or the infliction of a painful punishment upon them — such as being struck by calamities, wars, famines, or being subjected to humiliation and defeat — all as a result of their stubborn rejection of the truth. This is not a random or arbitrary act; rather, it is a predetermined decree that has been recorded in the Preserved Tablet from eternity. It is an unchangeable divine law that has always applied to nations that defied their prophets, and it will continue to apply until the end of time.

The verse serves as both a warning and a reassurance: a warning to those who persist in disbelief that no power on earth can protect them from Allah's justice, and a reassurance to the believers that the enemies of truth will never escape accountability. The certainty of this decree is absolute, for it is written in the eternal book of divine destiny — a record that never errs, never changes, and never fails to come to pass.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse invites every soul to pause and reflect on the fate of those who came before us. Where are the mighty empires, the powerful tyrants, and the arrogant nations who rejected the messengers of Allah? They have all tasted the consequences of their choices — some were destroyed completely, and others were struck with severe punishments — yet the lesson remains for those who have hearts to understand and ears to hear.

Dear reader, this is not merely a historical account; it is a living reality. The same divine law that governed past nations applies to us today. Allah's promise is true, and His decree is certain. The path of faith and righteousness leads to safety and honor, while the path of disbelief and transgression leads to ruin — in this life and the next. Let this verse be a turning point for you, a moment of sincere reflection, and a motivation to draw closer to your Creator, who is ever-merciful, ever-forgiving, and ever-ready to accept the repentance of those who turn to Him. Do not wait until the punishment arrives; seize the opportunity of today, for tomorrow may be too late.

📜 Verse 56-60 — Al-Isra

Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."
Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed.
And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.
And [remember, O Muhammad], when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people." And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.
