Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ayaat (الآيَاتِ): Miracles and clear signs requested by the disbelievers as proof of prophethood.
  • Mubsirah (مُبْصِرَةً): A manifest, clear, and illuminating sign that makes the truth evident to all who see it.
  • Zalamoo biha (فَظَلَمُوا بِهَا): They wronged themselves by rejecting and denying the sign, and they were unjust toward it.
  • Takhweefan (تَخْوِيفًا): A means of warning and instilling fear to prompt reflection and faith.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers of Quraysh who repeatedly demanded extraordinary miracles—such as bringing the dead back to life or turning the mountain into gold—as conditions for their faith. Allah reveals that His refusal to grant these demands is not out of inability, but out of divine wisdom and mercy.

The reason is clear: when previous nations were given the miracles they requested, they still rejected them and were consequently destroyed. The pattern of history shows that when a people are granted a miracle and then persist in denial, divine punishment becomes inevitable. Allah, in His mercy toward this final Ummah, withheld such miracles to give them time and opportunity to believe and be saved.

Allah then reminds us of the example of Thamud, the people of Prophet Salih. They were given the she-camel—a miraculous sign that emerged from a solid rock as proof of Salih's truthfulness. It was a clear, visible, and undeniable sign. Yet, they wronged themselves by rejecting it, hamstringing the camel, and defying their prophet. Their punishment was swift and severe.

Finally, Allah clarifies the purpose of all miracles and signs: they are sent as warnings to awaken hearts, to shake people from heedlessness, and to guide them toward faith. They are not mere spectacles or entertainment; they are divine messages calling humanity to reflect, repent, and submit to their Creator.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson. Allah does not burden us with unnecessary demands or withhold guidance from us. He has sent His final revelation—the Qur'an—as the greatest and most enduring miracle, one that challenges all of humanity across every generation. It is a living sign, full of wisdom, science, and guidance that continues to amaze and convince.

The door of faith is open for you today. Do not wait for extraordinary signs that may never come. Instead, look at the universe around you—the heavens, the earth, your own creation—and you will find countless signs of Allah's power and mercy. Respond to His call with sincerity, and you will find peace, purpose, and salvation in this life and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 57-61 — Al-Isra

Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed.
And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.
And [remember, O Muhammad], when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people." And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.
And [mention] when We said to the angles, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?"
