Word Meanings:

  • Al-Waseelah (الوسيلة): The means of nearness to Allah; the path or act that brings one closer to Him.
  • Yabtaghoon (يبتغون): They seek, strive for, and earnestly desire.
  • Mahthooran (محذورًا): Something to be feared and avoided; a danger that must be guarded against.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a profound misconception held by the polytheists of Makkah. They used to call upon prophets, righteous people, and angels—supplicating to them and seeking their intercession—thinking these beings could benefit or harm them independently of Allah. Allah corrects this error by revealing the true reality: those very beings whom the polytheists invoke are themselves humble servants of Allah. They do not possess any power or authority on their own.

Rather, these honored prophets, angels, and righteous souls are constantly striving to draw nearer to their Lord. They compete with one another in seeking the means of closeness to Allah—through sincere worship, obedience, and righteous deeds. Each of them hopes to be among those most beloved and nearest to their Creator. They yearn for His mercy with hopeful hearts, and they fear His punishment with reverent caution. Their fear is not baseless, for the punishment of your Lord, O Messenger, is truly something to be dreaded and guarded against—no one, not even the most exalted angel or the most noble prophet, is safe from it if Allah wills otherwise.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: if the prophets and angels themselves—despite their lofty status—do not dare to claim any power or divinity, and instead humble themselves before Allah, seeking His mercy and fearing His punishment, then how can anyone else be justified in worshipping them or calling upon them? True worship belongs to Allah alone, and the path to Him is through sincere devotion, not through intermediaries who are themselves in need of His grace.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. It invites you to purify your faith and direct your worship exclusively to the One who is truly worthy of it. The prophets and angels—the best of creation—stand as examples of humility and devotion, not as objects of worship. They show us that the way to Allah is open to all who sincerely seek Him, through good deeds, hope in His mercy, and fear of His punishment. Let this verse inspire you to examine your own relationship with your Lord. Are you seeking closeness to Him through righteous actions? Do you hope in His mercy while fearing His displeasure? This is the balanced path of the believers—a path of love, hope, and reverence that leads to eternal success. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 55-59 — Al-Isra

And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have made some of the prophets exceed others [in various ways], and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].
Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."
Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed.
And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.
