Explanation of the Verse:
Just as We caused them to sleep for an extraordinarily long period through Our divine power, We also awakened them in perfect condition, without any change to their bodies or clothing, so that they might ask one another about their situation. When they woke up, one of them asked, "How long have we stayed here?" Some replied, "We have stayed a day or part of a day," because they had entered the cave at sunrise and were awakened near the end of the day, so they assumed only a short time had passed. However, others, realizing the matter was beyond their knowledge, wisely said, "Your Lord knows best how long you have stayed. Let us leave this matter to Him and focus on what concerns us."
Then they decided to send one of their number into the city with their silver coins. They instructed him: "Go to the city we came from, and look carefully for the purest and most lawful food available — food that is not contaminated by any forbidden practices. Bring us a provision from it. Be gentle and discreet in your dealings, and do not let anyone become aware of our presence here." They feared that if their identity was discovered, they would be forced back into their old society, or even harmed, because they had fled to preserve their faith.
This verse beautifully demonstrates the balance between reliance on Allah and taking practical, wise measures. They entrusted the knowledge of their sleep duration to Allah, but they actively took steps to secure their sustenance with caution and wisdom. It also highlights their deep commitment to purity — they sought only lawful (halal) food, even in a difficult situation, showing that a believer's concern for what is permissible never fades, no matter the circumstances.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This story carries a profound lesson for every believer: when faced with uncertainty, we must combine trust in Allah with thoughtful, lawful action. The young men of the cave did not panic or despair; they turned to Allah for what they could not know, and they used their God-given intellect for what they could manage. Their caution and their insistence on pure, lawful sustenance remind us that our faith is not merely a set of rituals — it is a complete way of life that governs even how we earn, buy, and eat. Let this inspire you to always seek what is pure and lawful, to be wise and careful in your affairs, and to place your ultimate trust in Allah, who knows what we do not know. Indeed, He who awakened them after centuries is fully capable of guiding you through every trial you face.
