Aw yusbiha maaa`uhaaa ghawran falan tastatee`a lahoo talabaa
📖 English Meaning
Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ghawran (غَوْرًا): Water that has sunk deep into the earth, disappearing from the surface and becoming unreachable.
  • Tastalīʿa (تَسْتَطِيعَ): To be able to do something, to have the power or means to accomplish it.
  • Ṭalaban (طَلَبًا): Seeking, searching, or attempting to retrieve something.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the advice of the believing man to his arrogant, wealthy companion who had boasted about his garden and denied the Hereafter. After warning that Allah could destroy the garden entirely or send a calamity from the sky, the believer adds another possibility: "Or its water may become deep-sunken [into the earth], and then you would never be able to seek it out."

The meaning here is that Allah could cause the water source of the garden—the very lifeline of its trees, crops, and beauty—to sink so deeply into the ground that no matter how hard the owner tries, he could never retrieve it. No digging, no machinery, no effort would bring it back. Once the water is gone, the garden inevitably withers, dries up, and turns into barren land. The owner would be left helpless, watching his pride and source of wealth vanish before his eyes, unable to do anything to save it.

This is a profound reminder of human vulnerability. The water that sustains life is a mercy from Allah, and He alone controls it. The same water that flows easily today can disappear tomorrow by His will, leaving the most powerful person utterly powerless.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful scene. The garden owner had everything—wealth, children, and a flourishing piece of land. Yet, in a single moment, Allah could strip it all away. The believer's advice was not born of envy or malice; it was a sincere call to humility and gratitude. He urged his companion to say, *"Mā shāʾ Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh"* — "What Allah wills [has happened]; there is no power except with Allah." This simple phrase acknowledges that all blessings come from Allah and that we cannot preserve them without His help.

How often do we become attached to our possessions, our careers, our health, or our families, forgetting that they are all temporary gifts? The One who gave can take away in an instant. The water of your life—your provisions, your security, your comfort—can sink beyond your reach if Allah wills it. So, do not let pride fill your heart. Instead, thank Allah for every blessing, no matter how small, and recognize that your true security lies not in what you own, but in your relationship with your Creator.

Islam teaches us to live with balance: to enjoy the good things of this world, but never to let them distract us from our ultimate purpose. The believer in this story did not hate wealth; he simply understood its true value. He knew that paradise—the eternal garden—is far greater than any earthly vineyard. So, let this verse inspire you to turn to Allah with a humble heart, to say *Alhamdulillah* for every drop of water you drink, and to remember that true success lies in pleasing Him alone.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Al-Kahf

And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, 'What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah '? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,
It may be that my Lord will give me [something] better than your garden and will send upon it a calamity from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,
Or its water will become sunken [into the earth], so you would never be able to seek it."
And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turn his hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed upon its trellises, and said, "Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lord anyone."
And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself.
