- "وَأُحِيطَ بِثَمَرِهِ": Destruction encompassed his fruits from all sides, meaning total ruin and devastation.
- "يُقَلِّبُ كَفَّيْهِ": He turns his palms over and over — a gesture of intense grief, regret, and helplessness.
- "خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا": The garden collapsed upon its trellises and supports; its vines and structures fell down in ruins.
- "عُرُوشِهَا": The wooden frameworks or supports upon which grapevines are trained to climb.
Explanation of the Verse:
The scene unfolds like a painful reality check. The believing man had warned his arrogant, wealthy companion that all worldly possessions are fleeting and that true security lies only in gratitude to Allah. And then — exactly as warned — the punishment descended. The man's entire garden, with all its fruits and wealth, was completely destroyed. Nothing remained standing; the trellises that once held heavy clusters of grapes collapsed, and the garden became a heap of ruins.
Now, the same man who had proudly walked into his garden saying, "I do not think this will ever perish," stands before the wreckage of his dreams. He turns his palms over and over — a universal gesture of utter helplessness and sorrow — mourning every coin he spent, every effort he invested, every hour he devoted to building what is now dust. His hands, which once pointed proudly at his wealth, now twist in anguish.
And in that moment of crushing loss, the truth he had denied finally pierces his heart. He cries out: "Oh, would that I had never associated anyone with my Lord!" — a confession of his shirk (associating partners with Allah) and his arrogance. But this regret comes too late; it is the remorse of a soul that realizes the truth only when the world has slipped away from its grasp.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause at this scene. How many of us place our trust in gardens, bank accounts, careers, or status — forgetting that the Owner of all things can take them back in an instant? This verse is not merely a story of a man in the past; it is a mirror for every soul that becomes intoxicated with worldly success.
The believer's advice to his companion was simple and timeless: *"Why did you not say, 'As Allah wills, there is no power except by Allah'?"* (18:39). These words are not just a phrase to recite; they are a shield for the heart — a recognition that every blessing comes from Allah and can be preserved only through His mercy.
Let this verse awaken in you a profound gratitude. When you walk into your home, your workplace, or your garden, let your heart be filled with humility. Say: "Mā shā'a Allāh, lā quwwata illā billāh" — *"What Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah."* For the One who gives is the One who can take away, and the wise heart attaches itself not to the gift, but to the Giver.
And know that the regret of that man — *"Would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord"* — is a regret that will be echoed by every soul that prioritized the creation over the Creator. But for you, dear reader, the door of repentance is still open. Turn to Allah now, before the day comes when turning back is no longer possible. Let your life be a testimony to tawheed (the oneness of Allah), and let your heart find peace in the One who never perishes, even when all else crumbles.
