Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- حُسْبَانًا (husban): A calamity or punishment from the sky, specifically lightning bolts or destructive fire sent as divine retribution.
- صَعِيدًا زَلَقًا (sa'eedan zalaqa): Smooth, bare ground — slippery earth upon which nothing grows and feet cannot find firm footing.
Explanation of the Verse:
The believing man, addressing his arrogant, wealthy companion who had boasted of his garden and denied the Hereafter, responds with profound faith and wisdom. He says: "Perhaps my Lord will grant me something better than your garden" — meaning, in the Hereafter, Allah may give him what is far superior to all worldly possessions. Then he warns: "And He may send upon your garden a punishment from the sky" — a devastating calamity, such as a thunderbolt or a destructive fire — "so that it becomes smooth, slippery ground" — completely barren, desolate land where nothing grows, so smooth that feet cannot even stand upon it.
This is a powerful statement of tawheed (monotheism) and reliance upon Allah. The believer does not merely defend himself; he declares that true wealth lies not in gardens and children, but in the pleasure of Allah. He reminds his companion that all blessings are from Allah and can be taken away in an instant. The believer's hope ("perhaps") is not a sign of weakness, but of certainty — he knows that Allah's reward in the Hereafter far exceeds any worldly treasure, and that divine justice will not leave arrogance unpunished.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, see how the believer responds to mockery with dignity and faith. He does not curse or despair; rather, he places his trust in Allah and reminds the arrogant of the transient nature of this world. How often do we see people pride themselves on their wealth, homes, or status — yet forget that every blessing can vanish in a moment? The garden that once brought joy can become a barren wasteland overnight. Let this verse be a reminder: attach your heart to Allah, the Owner of all blessings, not to the blessings themselves. Say when you see something beautiful: "Maa shaa Allah, la quwwata illa billah" (What Allah wills, there is no power except with Allah). And know that the true, everlasting garden is the one prepared for the believers in the Hereafter — a garden that never decays, never withers, and never ends. May Allah make us among those who humble themselves before Him and seek His eternal reward.
