Translation — Tafsir
They ask you, O Prophet, about wine and gambling. Wine is every intoxicant that veils the mind and clouds one's reason, whether consumed as a drink or otherwise. Gambling is the practice of staking wealth in games of chance or contests where one party gains at the expense of the other. Say to them: In both there is great sin and harm—harm to one's religion, wealth, and intellect, and harm to society through enmity and hatred—yet they also contain some benefits for people, such as the fleeting pleasure of drinking or the ease of acquiring money without effort. But their sin is far greater than their benefit, for they divert people from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer, and they sow discord among hearts. This statement was a gradual step toward their eventual prohibition, showing Allah's wisdom in guiding His servants gently.
They also ask you, O Prophet, what they should spend in charity and voluntary giving. Say to them: Spend what exceeds your needs—the surplus of your wealth after fulfilling your essential obligations. This was the guidance at that time, later refined by the obligatory charity (zakah) with its specific rules. In this manner, Allah makes His signs and rulings clear to you, so that you may reflect deeply on what benefits you in this life and the Hereafter, and so that your hearts may turn to Him with gratitude and obedience.
Reflect, dear reader, on the mercy of Allah in this verse. He does not burden you with sudden prohibitions, but rather educates you step by step, showing you the balance between harm and benefit, and guiding you to what purifies your soul and protects your society. When you understand the wisdom behind His commands, your faith deepens, and you embrace His guidance with love and certainty. Let this be a call to you: examine your own choices, and ask yourself—does this action bring me closer to Allah or distance me from Him? Does it build harmony among people or tear it apart? Allah has made the path clear, so walk it with sincerity, and you will find success in this world and the next.
