Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَزَمُوا (Azamoo): They firmly resolved, determined, and decided upon something with strong intention.
- الطَّلَاقَ (At-Talaq): Divorce — the dissolution of the marriage bond.
- سَمِيعٌ (Samee'): All-Hearing — He hears every word, whether spoken aloud or whispered.
- عَلِيمٌ (Aleem): All-Knowing — He knows every intention, thought, and hidden motive.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse follows the discussion of Ila' (a vow of abstinence from marital relations), where a husband swears not to approach his wife for a period. If the husband persists in this vow and refuses to return to his wife, then his firm resolve and continued abstinence effectively become a decision to divorce. In this context, Allah states that if they firmly resolve upon divorce — whether by uttering the words of divorce or by persisting in their vow with the clear intention of ending the marriage — then Allah is All-Hearing of their statements and All-Knowing of their inner intentions and true purposes.
Allah hears the words of divorce when they are spoken, and He knows what lies in the hearts — whether the intention behind the vow was to harm the wife, to pressure her, or to genuinely end the marriage. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will hold each person accountable according to their true intentions and actions. This serves as a profound reminder that divorce is not a trivial matter to be taken lightly; it is a serious step that is witnessed by Allah Himself, who knows the sincerity or insincerity behind every word and deed.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: Allah is always watching and listening. He knows the words we utter and the intentions we conceal. When a husband contemplates divorce, he must remember that Allah hears him and knows his heart. This awareness should lead every Muslim to act with justice, mercy, and sincerity in all matters — especially in the sacred bond of marriage. Islam teaches us to treat our spouses with kindness and fairness, and to remember that even in moments of difficulty or separation, we are never outside the sight of Allah. Let this verse inspire you to be mindful of Allah in every decision you make, to speak with truth, and to act with integrity — for Allah's hearing and knowledge encompass everything, and His justice is perfect.
