Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:
O believers, there is absolutely no sin or blame upon you if you divorce your wives before you have consummated the marriage with them, and before you have fixed a specific dowry for them. In such a case, no obligatory dowry is due to them, because the full dowry is only confirmed upon consummation, and the half-dowry is only due when a dowry has been specified. However, this does not mean that you should leave them empty-handed. Rather, Allah — in His infinite mercy and wisdom — commands you to give them a fair and reasonable gift of consolation (mut‘ah) that will comfort their hearts, soothe the pain of separation, and honor their dignity. This gift is not a punishment or a burden, but a beautiful act of kindness that reflects the noble character of a true believer.
The amount of this gift is not fixed, but it is determined according to the financial capacity of the husband: the wealthy man gives according to his wealth, and the poor man gives according to his means — each according to what Allah has granted him, without extravagance or stinginess. This is a right established upon those who excel in goodness (al-muḥsinīn) — those who treat others with ihsān (excellence and perfection in character), and who obey Allah in their dealings, knowing that Allah sees all that they do.
This verse beautifully demonstrates the mercy and gentleness of Islam in regulating even the most difficult of human situations — divorce. It teaches us that even when a relationship ends before it truly begins, the believer must not forget kindness, generosity, and respect. Islam does not leave the woman humiliated or abandoned; rather, it commands the man to honor her with a gift, acknowledging her dignity and worth as a human being. This is a lesson for all of us: that in every situation, even in separation, we must strive to be among the muḥsinīn — those who spread goodness, heal hearts, and uphold the highest standards of moral excellence. Let this beautiful teaching inspire you to embody kindness in all your affairs, for Allah loves those who do good, and He promises them His reward and His love.
