Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Azzin (وَأَذِّن): Proclaim, announce publicly, and call out to people.
  • Rijāl (رِجَالًا): Walking on foot (men travelling by foot).
  • Ḍāmir (ضَامِرٍ): A lean, hardy camel that has become thin from travel and exertion, yet remains strong and capable — not weak from emaciation.
  • Fajj (فَجٍّ): A wide mountain pass, road, or pathway.
  • ʿAmīq (عَمِيقٍ): Deep, distant, or far-reaching (a long and remote route).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is part of the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who, after completing the construction of the Sacred House (the Kaaba) with his son Ismail, was commanded by Allah to issue a universal call to humanity — inviting them to perform the pilgrimage (Hajj). The command is: "And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every deep and distant highway."

The call of Ibrahim was not a mere whisper or a limited invitation; it was a loud, clear proclamation to all people, across all times and places. Allah tells us that the response to this call would be people arriving from every corner of the earth — some walking on foot, enduring the hardship of the journey with patience and devotion, and others riding on camels that have become lean and hardy from the long trek across deserts and mountains. These camels, described as "ḍāmir," are not weak or sickly; rather, they are strong and resilient, having lost excess flesh from the rigors of travel, symbolizing the sacrifice and effort pilgrims make to answer the call of their Lord.

The phrase "from every deep and distant highway" (min kulli fajjin ʿamīq) emphasizes that the invitation reaches the farthest and most remote corners of the world. No distance is too great, no path too difficult, for those who sincerely respond to the call of Allah. This verse beautifully illustrates the universality of Islam and the unity of the Ummah — people of different colors, languages, and lands all converging on one sacred destination, driven by a single purpose: to worship Allah alone.

This call continues to echo through the centuries. Every year, millions of Muslims from all over the globe answer the call of Ibrahim, fulfilling the fifth pillar of Islam. The verse also highlights the profound wisdom behind Hajj: it is a gathering where believers seek forgiveness for their sins, earn immense rewards, remember Allah's name through sacrifice, and experience the brotherhood and equality of all Muslims before their Creator.

Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the power of this divine call. Allah Himself commanded His prophet to invite humanity to His House, and He guaranteed that the invitation would be answered. This shows us the immense mercy and love Allah has for His servants — He opens the doors of His House to all who wish to come, regardless of their status, wealth, or origin. The Hajj is a living miracle of Ibrahim's call, manifesting before our eyes every single year.

If you have not yet answered this call, know that the door is open for you. The journey may seem long, the path may seem hard, but the reward is beyond imagination — the forgiveness of sins, the purification of the soul, and the honor of being a guest of the Most Merciful. And if you have already performed Hajj, remember the spirit of that journey: the sacrifice, the devotion, and the closeness to Allah. Carry that spirit with you every day, and let it transform your life into one of continuous worship and obedience.

The call of Ibrahim is not just a historical event; it is a living invitation to every soul on earth. Will you answer it?

📜 Verse 25-29 — Al-Hajj

Indeed, those who have disbelieved and avert [people] from the way of Allah and [from] al-Masjid al-Haram, which We made for the people - equal are the resident therein and one from outside; and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass -
That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. So eat of them and feed the miserable and poor.
Then let them end their untidiness and fulfill their vows and perform Tawaf around the ancient House."
