📖 English Meaning
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Sawami'" (صَوَامِعُ): Monastic cells or hermitages used by Christian monks for seclusion and worship.
  • "Biya'" (بِيَعٌ): Churches used by Christians for congregational prayer.
  • "Salawat" (صَلَوَاتٌ): Synagogues or places of prayer used by the Jews.
  • "Masajid" (مَسَاجِدُ): Mosques of the Muslims, where they prostrate to Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse speaks of the believers who were driven out of their homes in Makkah — not for any crime or injustice they had committed, but solely because they proclaimed: "Our Lord is Allah alone." Their only "offense" was their faith, their declaration of Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah). They were persecuted, tortured, and exiled purely for their belief in the truth.

Then Allah draws our attention to a profound divine wisdom: had it not been for Allah's repelling of some people by means of others — through the institution of jihad, the establishment of justice, and the defense of the oppressed — then places of worship across the earth would have been demolished. The verse lists these sacred sites in a remarkable order: the hermitages of monks, the churches of Christians, the synagogues of Jews, and the mosques of Muslims, in which the name of Allah is remembered abundantly. This shows that Islam protects not only its own places of worship but also the sanctuaries of all who believe in God, for the defense of religion and the preservation of worship is a universal good.

The verse concludes with a divine promise that brings comfort to every oppressed believer: "And Allah will surely aid those who aid His cause." Whoever stands up for Allah's religion, defends His truth, and supports His righteous servants — Allah will certainly come to their aid. For Allah is Qawiyy (Mighty, Whose power knows no limits) and Aziz (Exalted in Might, Whom no one can overcome).

Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful promise: your struggle for the sake of Allah is never in vain. When you feel weak, remember that the One who created the heavens and the earth is your Protector. He has promised victory to those who support His cause — whether through their words, their wealth, their efforts, or their lives. So be among those who aid Allah, and you will surely witness His aid in your life, just as He aided the early Muslims who were driven from their homes yet were granted victory, honor, and a lasting legacy. This is the way of Allah that never changes — and His promise is true.

Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.
Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.

[And they are] those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer and give zakah and enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. And to Allah belongs the outcome of [all] matters.
And if they deny you, [O Muhammad] - so, before them, did the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud deny [their prophets],
