Tafsir (Explanation):
In the early days of Islam, the Muslims in Makkah were strictly forbidden from fighting back against the polytheists, even when they were subjected to severe persecution, torture, and abuse. They were commanded to exercise patience and endurance, bearing the harm with steadfastness. However, when the oppression of the disbelievers reached its extreme limit—when they drove the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions out of their homes, confiscated their property, and forced them to emigrate to Madinah—Allah granted the believers permission to defend themselves and fight back. This permission was given specifically because they had been wronged and had suffered grave injustice at the hands of their enemies.
This verse marks a pivotal turning point in Islamic history: it was the first divine authorization for armed struggle in self-defense. The permission was not arbitrary or aggressive; rather, it was a response to the continuous aggression and tyranny inflicted upon the Muslims. Allah, the Most High, affirms that He is fully capable of granting victory to His believing servants, even without them having to fight. Yet, His divine wisdom decreed that the believers should engage in struggle themselves, so that their faith, sincerity, and devotion might be tested and purified, and so that they might earn the reward of striving in His cause.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah never abandons those who are wronged. He sees every injustice, every tear, and every hardship endured for His sake. When the believers were weak and oppressed, He did not forget them—He granted them permission to rise, and He promised them victory. This is a timeless reminder that no matter how difficult circumstances may become, Allah’s power is limitless, and His help is always near. The believers are encouraged to place their complete trust in Him, to remain patient in the face of trials, and to know that victory comes not from their own strength alone, but from the will and support of the Almighty. Indeed, Islam is a religion of justice and mercy—it does not initiate aggression, but it firmly stands against oppression and grants its followers the right to defend their faith, their honor, and their lives. Let this verse inspire you to hold fast to Allah’s promise, for He is the Best of Helpers.
