Key Words and Phrases:
- Khuṭuwāt al-Shayṭān (خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ): The footsteps or paths of Satan—meaning his subtle suggestions, deceptive tricks, and the gradual steps by which he leads a person into sin.
- Al-Faḥshā’ (الْفَحْشَاءِ): Immorality, lewdness, or any act that is extremely obscene and repugnant to sound nature and divine law.
- Al-Munkar (الْمُنكَرِ): That which is rejected and denounced—acts that are clearly forbidden by Islamic law and contradict righteousness.
- Tazkīyah (تَزْكِيَة): Purification—cleansing the soul from sin and impurity, and nurturing it with faith and virtue.
Explanation of the Verse:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance, do not follow the deceptive paths of Satan. Do not walk step by step behind his whispers, for he does not confront you with open evil all at once—rather, he entices you with small compromises until you find yourself trapped in major sins. Whoever follows Satan’s footsteps will soon discover that Satan commands nothing but immorality and that which is rejected by sound hearts and divine law—acts of lewdness, injustice, and transgression.
And were it not for Allah’s abundant favor upon you and His encompassing mercy, none of you would ever be purified from the stain of sin—not a single person, at any time. But Allah, in His infinite grace, purifies whom He wills by accepting their repentance, cleansing their hearts, and guiding them back to righteousness. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing of every word you utter, and All-Knowing of the intentions hidden within your hearts and the deeds you carry out. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will reward or recompense you accordingly.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a profound reminder that the greatest danger to a believer is not a sudden fall into sin, but the slow, unnoticed drift along Satan’s pathways. Satan does not ask you to abandon your faith overnight—he simply asks you to take one small step, then another, until you find yourself far from the light of guidance. Therefore, be vigilant, dear believer! Guard your heart, watch your steps, and seek Allah’s protection constantly. When you stumble, do not despair—for Allah’s mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is always open. He purifies whom He wills, and He loves those who turn back to Him. Let this verse inspire you to hold firmly to the rope of Allah, to surround yourself with righteous company, and to make sincere supplication that Allah keeps your heart steadfast upon His path. For truly, the One who hears every whisper and knows every intention is the One who will guide you, purify you, and grant you success in this life and the Hereafter.
