Word Meanings:
- Faḍl (فضل): Grace, bounty, and favor.

- Raḥīm (رحيم): Merciful, continuously bestowing mercy.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a profound reminder in the midst of the incident of the slander (al-Ifk), where some believers were drawn into spreading false accusations against the Mother of the Believers, ʿĀ'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Allah addresses the believers, saying: "Were it not for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy, and that Allah is Most Kind, Most Merciful..." — meaning, had it not been for His overflowing favor and encompassing mercy, He would have hastened punishment upon those who fell into this grave error.
The verse teaches us that Allah's grace and mercy are the shields that protect believers from the immediate consequences of their sins. His kindness (ra'fah) is the most intense form of mercy — a tenderness that He extends to His servants despite their shortcomings. This is not merely a statement of forgiveness; it is an invitation to recognize that every moment we are not punished for our mistakes is a manifestation of His boundless compassion.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in instilling hope in the hearts of believers! It tells us that our Lord does not rush to punish us when we err, but rather gives us the opportunity to repent, learn, and grow. This is the essence of Islam — a religion of mercy that opens the door of forgiveness wide for every sinner. When you stumble, do not despair; instead, look at the grace of Allah that covers you, and let His mercy draw you closer to Him. The same Allah who was kind to those who erred in the incident of al-Ifk is the One who is kind to you today. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, for His mercy encompasses everything, and His love for His servants is greater than any sin they could commit. Let this verse be a source of comfort and motivation — a reminder that no matter how far you fall, His mercy is always nearer, always ready to lift you up.
