Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sananthuru (سَنَنظُرُ): We will see/observe — meaning we will examine and investigate the matter carefully.
- Asadaqta (أَصَدَقْتَ): Whether you have spoken the truth.
- Am kunta min al-kadhibin (أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ): Or whether you are among the liars.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the hoopoe bird completed its remarkable report about the people of Sheba — their powerful queen, their magnificent throne, and their sun-worship — Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) responded with wisdom and composure. He did not rush to accept the news blindly, nor did he dismiss it outright. Instead, he said: "We will see whether you have spoken the truth or whether you are among the liars."
This statement reflects the balanced and just approach of a true leader. Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) neither rejected the hoopoe's testimony nor embraced it without verification. He gave the bird the benefit of the doubt while making it clear that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. This is the hallmark of wisdom — to withhold judgment until the truth becomes clear.
The verse also demonstrates an important principle in Islam: the necessity of verifying news and information before acting upon it. Allah says in the Qur'an: "O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful" (Al-Hujurat: 6). Prophet Sulayman's response embodies this very teaching.
Notice also the gentleness in his words. He did not threaten the hoopoe or punish it for what could have been a false report. Rather, he gave it a fair chance to prove its honesty. This teaches us to deal with others with fairness and patience, even when we are uncertain about their claims.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse invites every believer to adopt a noble character trait: the pursuit of certainty before judgment. In our daily lives, how often do we rush to conclusions about others based on hearsay or incomplete information? How many relationships have been damaged by unverified words? Let us learn from Prophet Sulayman's example — to pause, to investigate, and to give others the opportunity to clarify themselves.
Moreover, this story reminds us of the greatness of Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him), to whom Allah granted dominion over birds, winds, and jinn. Yet with all that power, he remained humble, just, and meticulous in his dealings. His kingdom was not built on tyranny or haste, but on wisdom and divine guidance.
And when the hoopoe brought news of a people worshipping the sun instead of Allah, Sulayman saw it as an opportunity to spread the message of monotheism — the very essence of Islam. This teaches us that every piece of information, every encounter, can be a chance to call others to the worship of the One True God, with wisdom and beautiful preaching.
May Allah grant us the discernment to distinguish truth from falsehood, and the patience to verify before we act. And may He make us among those who uphold justice and spread His message with wisdom and compassion.
