Word Meanings:

  • "Fa'alqih" (فَأَلْقِهْ): Literally means "cast it" or "throw it" — here it means to deliver the letter to them.
  • "Tawalla" (تَوَلَّ): To turn away, withdraw, or step aside.
  • "Yarji'oon" (يَرْجِعُونَ): What they will say in response or reply.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him), after hearing the hoopoe's report about the people of Sheba (Saba') and their queen Bilqis, decided to test the truthfulness of this news. He wrote a letter and handed it to the hoopoe, commanding him: "Go with this letter of mine and deliver it to them — to Bilqis and her people — then step aside from them, staying close enough to hear their discussion, and observe what response they will give."

This command reveals profound wisdom. Sulayman did not send an army or a delegation of ministers; he sent a bird with a letter. This was a strategic move to open a channel of communication peacefully, to invite them to the truth without confrontation. By instructing the hoopoe to withdraw after delivering the letter, Sulayman demonstrated remarkable diplomatic etiquette — he gave them space to deliberate freely, to discuss among themselves without feeling pressured or intimidated by his presence. This approach respects their autonomy while still conveying the message.

The verse beautifully illustrates the power of wisdom in da'wah (calling to Allah). Sulayman, despite his immense kingdom and power, chose gentleness and intelligence over force. He understood that hearts are won through respect and thoughtful communication, not through domination. The instruction to observe their reaction also shows the importance of assessing and understanding the response of those we invite — whether they accept, reject, or need further clarification.

This story carries a timeless lesson for every believer: when conveying the message of truth, we should do so with wisdom, patience, and respect for the other party's freedom to think and respond. We deliver the message, then step back — allowing the natural course of reflection to take place, trusting that guidance ultimately comes from Allah alone.
