📖 English Meaning
And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command of Allah accomplished.

Word Meanings:

  • "An'amta 'alayhi" — the favor you (O Prophet) bestowed upon him, meaning the freeing of Zayd ibn Harithah from slavery.
  • "Amsik 'alayka zawjak" — keep your wife and do not divorce her.
  • "Tukhfi fi nafsika" — you conceal within yourself what Allah has revealed to you.
  • "Watar" — need, desire, or purpose; here it refers to the completion of the marital relationship or the fulfillment of one's need from the spouse.
  • "Ad'iya'ihim" — their adopted sons (those whom they called their sons, a pre-Islamic custom).
  • "Haraj" — sin, burden, or difficulty.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a profound moment in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the early Muslim community, revealing a divine lesson that would forever change a deeply ingrained social norm.

The story begins with Zayd ibn Harithah, a man whom Allah had blessed with the greatest favor — Islam — and whom the Prophet had blessed with the favor of freedom, having emancipated him from slavery and adopted him as a son. Zayd came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) seeking counsel about his wife, Zaynab bint Jahsh, expressing his desire to divorce her due to incompatibility. The Prophet, being wise and compassionate, advised him: "Keep your wife and fear Allah" — meaning, do not rush into divorce, and remain mindful of Allah in your decision.

Yet, at the same time, Allah had already revealed to His Prophet that Zaynab would eventually become his wife — a divine decree designed to abolish the pre-Islamic custom of treating adopted sons as biological sons, which made it taboo for a man to marry the divorced wife of his adopted son. The Prophet (peace be upon him) concealed this knowledge in his heart, fearing how the hypocrites and the people would react. They would say: "Muhammad married the divorced wife of his adopted son!" This was a heavy social burden.

Allah, in His infinite mercy, gently corrected His beloved Prophet: "You fear the people, but Allah has more right that you fear Him." This is a tender reminder that the approval of Allah outweighs the criticism of creation. The Prophet's hesitation was not a sin — it was a natural human inclination — but Allah elevated him to a station where the fear of Allah alone should guide his actions.

Then came the divine decree: "When Zayd fulfilled his need from her (i.e., divorced her and her waiting period ended), We married her to you." This was not merely a personal matter — it was a legislative act for all of humanity. By this marriage, Allah established that there is no sin or shame in a believer marrying the divorced wife of his adopted son once the marriage has ended and the waiting period ('iddah) has passed. The custom of adoption in the pre-Islamic era, which gave adopted sons the same legal status as biological sons, was thereby abolished. The verse reminds us: "And the command of Allah is always fulfilled" — nothing can prevent His decree from coming to pass.

This verse carries timeless lessons for every believer:

First, it teaches us the importance of prioritizing Allah's pleasure over the fear of people's opinions. How often do we hesitate to do what is right because we worry about what others might say? Allah reminds us that He alone deserves our ultimate reverence.

Second, it demonstrates the Prophet's humanity — he felt social pressure like any human being, yet Allah guided him with gentleness and mercy. This makes him relatable and shows that prophethood does not strip away human emotions but elevates them.

Third, it establishes a beautiful principle: Islam came to break the chains of harmful customs and replace them with divine guidance. What was once considered shameful — marrying a divorced woman of an adopted son — became permissible and even praiseworthy when done in obedience to Allah. This teaches us to submit our social norms to the revelation, not the other way around.

Fourth, the verse reassures us that Allah's decree will always come to pass, regardless of human hesitation or opposition. When Allah wills something, no force can stand in its way. So trust in Allah's plan, even when you cannot see the full picture.

Beloved reader, let this verse inspire you to examine your own heart: Are there matters where you fear people's judgment more than Allah's pleasure? Know that Allah's love and acceptance are far more valuable than the fleeting opinions of creation. When you align your will with His, He will grant you peace, honor, and success in ways you never imagined. And remember — the command of Allah is always fulfilled, so place your trust in Him and let His guidance illuminate your path.

📜 Verse 35-39 — Al-Ahzab

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.
There is not to be upon the Prophet any discomfort concerning that which Allah has imposed upon him. [This is] the established way of Allah with those [prophets] who have passed on before. And ever is the command of Allah a destiny decreed.
[Allah praises] those who convey the messages of Allah and fear Him and do not fear anyone but Allah. And sufficient is Allah as Accountant.
