Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse removes any doubt or hesitation regarding the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a matter that some might have found unusual or difficult to accept. Allah clarifies that there is no sin, blame, or restriction upon the Prophet in what Allah Himself has made lawful and permissible for him. This refers specifically to the marriage of the Prophet to Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), the former wife of his adopted son Zayd ibn Harithah, after her divorce — a marriage that served to abolish the pre-Islamic custom of treating adopted sons as biological sons in all legal and social matters.
Allah then establishes that this is not an innovation or an exception, but rather a continuation of His established way (Sunnah) with the prophets who came before. The prophets of old, such as Dawud and Sulayman (peace be upon them), were also granted marriages and family lives that were permissible for them by Allah's decree. Thus, the Prophet Muhammad is not the first messenger to face such matters; he is following the divine pattern set for the chosen messengers before him.
Finally, the verse concludes with a profound statement of divine sovereignty: "And the command of Allah is a decree determined." This means that whatever Allah has ordained — whether it be the abrogation of adoption customs, the permission of this marriage, or any other divine ruling — is a matter that has been firmly decided and must inevitably come to pass. No human opinion, social custom, or personal preference can alter what Allah has decreed. The Prophet, being the perfect servant, submitted completely to Allah's will without hesitation or personal choice in the matter.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: when Allah decrees something, it is always for our ultimate good, even if we do not fully understand the wisdom behind it at the moment. The Prophet (peace be upon him) — the most beloved of creation to Allah — was guided by divine wisdom in every aspect of his life, and his complete submission to Allah's commands is a living example for us. Just as the Prophet embraced Allah's decree with an open heart and full trust, we too should welcome Allah's rulings in our lives with contentment and faith, knowing that His knowledge encompasses all things and His wisdom is perfect. There is no restriction in following Allah's guidance — rather, true freedom lies in surrendering to the One who created us and knows what is best for us. Let this verse inspire you to trust Allah's plan, for His decree is always precise, purposeful, and filled with mercy.
