Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question that strikes at the heart of human reasoning: Is the one who lives in heedless disobedience, turning away from his Creator, better — or the one who stands in humble devotion before Allah during the quiet hours of the night, prostrating and standing in prayer? The latter is described as *qānit* — one who is wholly obedient, surrendering his will to Allah with sincerity and love. He spends the hours of darkness not in idle distraction, but in intimate worship, his forehead touching the ground in *sujūd*, his body upright in *qiyām*, all the while his heart is filled with two powerful emotions: fear of the Hereafter — of standing before Allah and being held accountable — and hope in the mercy of his Lord, knowing that Allah’s compassion encompasses all things and that His forgiveness is greater than any sin.
The verse then commands the Prophet (peace be upon him) to declare: *"Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know?"* The answer is self-evident — they are not equal, and never can be. Those who know their Lord, who understand His signs, who recognize the truth of His revelation and live by it, are on a path of light and guidance. Those who remain ignorant — not merely uninformed, but willfully blind to the truth — wander in darkness. Knowledge here is not mere information; it is the knowledge that transforms the heart, that leads to action, that fills the soul with awe and love for Allah.
And who truly benefits from such reminders and lessons? Only *ūlū al-albāb* — people of sound intellect, those whose minds are unclouded by arrogance, prejudice, or worldly desires. They are the ones who reflect, who weigh matters with wisdom, and who let the truth penetrate their hearts and change their lives.
This verse is a beautiful invitation to every seeker of truth. It tells us that the door of knowledge is open, that the path of worship is accessible, and that the difference between the people of Paradise and the people of ruin is not wealth, status, or lineage — but knowledge that leads to action, and devotion that springs from a living heart. O Muslim, let your nights be alive with prayer, your heart be filled with both hope and fear, and your mind be ever seeking the light of knowledge. For Allah does not look at your outward appearance, but at your heart and your deeds — and He loves those who strive to know Him and draw near to Him in the stillness of the night.
