Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَسَى (Asa): Hope or expectation, used here to indicate that Allah's forgiveness is certain and assured for those who are sincere.
- يَعْفُوَ (Ya'fuwa): To pardon, excuse, or overlook sins.
- عَفُوًّا (Afuwwan): The One Who pardons abundantly, erasing sins completely without leaving any trace.
- غَفُورًا (Ghafooran): The One Who forgives repeatedly and covers the faults of His servants with His mercy.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse comes as a compassionate exception to the stern warning mentioned in the preceding verses. Allah, the Most Merciful, refers to those truly weak and oppressed believers—men, women, and children—who are physically unable to migrate from the land of disbelief, who lack the strength to resist oppression, and who cannot find any means or path to escape their dire situation. They are not hypocrites who chose to stay out of love for disbelief; rather, they are sincere believers trapped by circumstances beyond their control.
For these people, Allah holds out the most beautiful promise: He may pardon them and overlook their inability to fulfill the obligation of migration. The word "عَسَى" (asa) from Allah is not a mere possibility—it is a guarantee of His grace, for when Allah expresses hope for His servants, it is His decree of mercy. Their excuse is genuine, their hearts are pure, and their intentions are true, so Allah's forgiveness encompasses them.
The verse concludes with a profound description of Allah's attributes: He is Al-Afuww (the Ever-Pardoning) and Al-Ghafoor (the Ever-Forgiving). This means He does not merely forgive—He erases sins entirely, as if they never occurred, and He continuously veils the faults of His servants with His infinite mercy. His pardon is not limited by time or repetition; it flows endlessly to those who turn to Him with sincerity.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, see how your Lord's mercy embraces even the weakest of His servants! If Allah extends His pardon to those who were unable to fulfill a duty due to genuine incapacity, how much more will He forgive you when you strive sincerely and fall short? Never despair of Allah's mercy, no matter how great your sins may seem. He is the One Who loves to forgive, and He waits for your return with open arms. Let this verse fill your heart with hope, and let it motivate you to be among those who are sincere in their faith, truthful in their intentions, and ever-turning to their Lord in repentance. For Allah's pardon is vast, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin you could commit.
