Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Murāghaman" (مُرَاغَمًا): A place of refuge and relocation, derived from the concept of "righm" (humiliation of the nose in the dust) — meaning a place where one can move to, causing the enemy’s nose to rub in the dust in disgrace.
- "Sa‘ah" (سَعَةً): Abundance and spaciousness — referring to ample provision, ease of life, and broad opportunities.
- "Yuqātil" (يُقَاتِل): Not present here, but the context implies striving in Allah’s cause.
- "Waqa‘a ajruhu" (وَقَعَ أَجْرُهُ): His reward is firmly established and guaranteed.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse is a beacon of hope and encouragement for every believer who faces hardship, oppression, or the suffocation of faith in a land where they cannot practice their religion freely. Allah, the Most Merciful, opens a door of relief and expansion for His servants, saying: "And whoever emigrates in the cause of Allah will find on the earth many places of refuge and abundance."
The meaning is profound: if a person leaves their homeland — sacrificing comfort, family, and familiarity — for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure and striving to uphold His religion, then Allah guarantees them a replacement. They will find "murāghaman" — a place to relocate where they will be honored and where their enemies will be humiliated. And they will find "sa‘ah" — vast provision and ease in their new life. This is a divine promise that no sincere sacrifice goes unrewarded. The earth is Allah’s, and He can make any corner of it a source of goodness for His faithful servants.
Then the verse addresses a deeply moving scenario: "And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger, and then death overtakes him — his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah." Imagine a believer who sets out on this noble journey with pure intention, but before reaching their destination — whether it be the land of safety or the Prophet ﷺ himself — death arrives. Does their effort go to waste? Absolutely not! Allah, in His infinite justice and mercy, declares that their reward is "incumbent upon Allah" — meaning it is a debt of honor that Allah has placed upon Himself, out of His grace, to fulfill completely. The person who dies on the path of hijrah (emigration for Allah’s sake) is like the one who reaches the destination; their intention is counted as their deed, and their reward is preserved in full.
The verse concludes with a beautiful reassurance: "And Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful." He forgives the past sins of the emigrant — even their previous life in shirk or disobedience — and His mercy embraces them at the moment of their greatest need. This is a call to every soul: do not let fear of loss or hardship hold you back from truth. Take the step of faith, and trust that Allah’s mercy and reward are far greater than anything you leave behind.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a living invitation to trust in Allah’s promise. Whether you are facing trials in your faith, seeking a better environment for your family, or simply longing to draw closer to Allah, know that He has prepared for you a way out and an abundant provision. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better." So take courage — the earth is vast, and Allah’s mercy is vaster. Your sincere step toward Him, even if your journey ends midway, is recorded with Him as a completed act of devotion. And what a beautiful ending it is: to die while walking toward Allah and His Messenger, with your reward already secured in the Most Merciful’s hands.
