Key Words and Meanings:
- A'jamiyyan (أَعْجَمِيًّا): Non-Arabic, foreign, or in a language other than Arabic.
- Fussilat (فُصِّلَتْ): Detailed, clearly explained, or made distinct in its verses.
- Waqr (وَقْر): Heaviness, deafness, or a blockage in the ears preventing hearing.
- 'Aman (عَمًى): Blindness, here referring to blindness of the heart and insight.
- Yunadawna min makanin ba'eed (يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ): They are called from a far-off place—a metaphor for their inability to hear or respond to the call of truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
Imagine, O Prophet, if We had sent this Qur'an down in a foreign language—not Arabic—the disbelievers of Quraysh would have immediately objected, saying: "Why are its verses not explained in our own tongue so that we may understand it? How can a book be in a non-Arabic language while the Messenger who delivers it is an Arab? This is utterly inconsistent!" They would have used this as another excuse to reject the truth, just as they find excuses today.
So Allah instructs you, O Muhammad, to answer them: This Qur'an, in its clear Arabic revelation, is a guidance for those who truly believe—leading them out of darkness and misguidance into the light of faith. It is a healing for their hearts, curing them of doubt, ignorance, and spiritual disease. As for those who refuse to believe, their ears are sealed with heaviness—they hear the words but do not benefit from them—and the Qur'an is blindness upon their hearts; they cannot see its truths or perceive its wisdom. Such people are like one who is called from a great distance: they hear a faint voice but cannot make out the words, and they are too far to respond. The call of truth reaches them, but they are utterly disconnected from it.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the Qur'an was revealed in the language of its people to remove every excuse and to make the message clear and accessible. Yet, the response to it depends on the state of the heart. Those who approach it with sincerity find it a source of guidance and healing, while those who turn away in arrogance remain in deafness and blindness—not because of any deficiency in the Qur'an, but because of the barriers they themselves have built.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. The Qur'an is not merely a book to be read—it is a living guide and a divine cure. If you open your heart to it with humility and a desire for truth, you will find in it light for your path, peace for your soul, and answers to your deepest questions. Do not be like those who are called from afar, hearing but not listening, seeing but not perceiving. Draw near to the Qur'an, let it speak to your heart, and you will discover that it is indeed a mercy and a healing for all of humanity, in every time and place.
