The Interpretation:
Allah, the Exalted, declares that He sent down the Torah upon His Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), and within it was profound guidance to lead humanity from darkness into light, and a radiant illumination clarifying the lawful and the prohibited, and the commands and prohibitions. This divine Book was not merely a text to be recited; it was a living constitution for justice and righteousness.
By this Book, the Prophets of the Children of Israel — those who submitted wholeheartedly to Allah's will and surrendered their affairs to Him — judged among the Jews. They did not deviate from its rulings nor alter its words, but rather implemented it with complete fidelity. Alongside them, the *Rabbaniyyoon* (the devoted worshippers and spiritual guides) and the *Ahbar* (the learned scholars) also judged by it. These scholars were entrusted by Allah with the custody of His Book; they were made its guardians, responsible for preserving it from corruption, distortion, and loss. They were witnesses over it, testifying to its truth and ensuring that its rulings were upheld among the people.
Then Allah addresses the scholars of the Jews and their leaders, saying: "Do not fear the people, but fear Me." This is a profound call to sincerity and courage — do not let the fear of creation prevent you from speaking the truth, implementing Allah's law, or disclosing what the Torah contains regarding the description of the Final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the rulings they know to be true. Fear Allah alone, for He is the One who holds benefit and harm in His Hands. And do not sell Allah's verses and signs for a small, miserable price — such as accepting bribes, seeking status, or pleasing the powerful at the expense of the divine truth. These worldly gains are but fleeting and insignificant compared to the eternal reward of Allah.
Finally, Allah declares: "And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed — those are the disbelievers." This refers to those who deliberately replace Allah's judgment with something else, who reject His law while believing it is permissible to do so, or who prefer other systems and laws over His revelation, treating them as equal or superior. Such people, who mock or disdain Allah's commands and turn away from them in arrogance, are the true disbelievers. This is a stern warning to every generation: the one who abandons Allah's revealed law, whether out of denial, arrogance, or preference for human systems over divine wisdom, has stepped into the domain of disbelief.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless and universal message. It reminds us that Allah's revelation is not a relic of the past — it is a living light for every age. The scholars and leaders of every community bear a sacred trust: to uphold Allah's law, to speak the truth without fear, and to never trade divine guidance for worldly gain. Let us ask ourselves: Are we truly fearing Allah above all else? Are we honoring His Book by implementing its teachings in our lives, our families, and our societies? The Quran and the Sunnah are our guidance and our light — let us cling to them, for in them lies our success in this life and the next. May Allah make us among those who judge by His revelation, who uphold His truth, and who never sell His verses for a paltry price.
