Word Meanings:
- Junaah (جُنَاح): Sin, blame, or burden of guilt.
- Ta'imu (طَعِمُوا): Ate or consumed — here referring to what they partook of, including food, drink, or gains from gambling.
- Ittaqaw (اتَّقَوا): Exercised God-consciousness, piety, and fear of Allah's displeasure.
- Ahsanū (أَحْسَنُوا): Excelled in doing good — reaching the highest level of excellence in worship and conduct, as if seeing Allah, knowing He sees them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse brings a profound message of divine mercy and reassurance to the believers who had consumed wine or engaged in gambling before these were explicitly prohibited. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, reveals that there is no sin upon those who believed and did righteous deeds for what they consumed in the past — provided they met a series of escalating conditions that demonstrate the sincerity and depth of their faith.
The first condition is taqwa — being mindful of Allah and guarding against His displeasure — coupled with faith and righteous deeds. This establishes the foundation of a true believer's life: a heart conscious of Allah, a soul anchored in belief, and hands that work for good.
Then the verse repeats: *"Then they remained conscious of Allah and believed"* — signifying a deepening of their faith and an increase in their awareness of Allah's presence. This is not a static faith but one that grows, strengthens, and becomes more profound over time.
Finally, the verse elevates them further: *"Then they remained conscious of Allah and excelled in doing good"* — reaching the station of Ihsan, the highest level of worship, where one serves Allah as though seeing Him, for even if they cannot see Him, He certainly sees them. This is the peak of spiritual excellence, where faith transforms every action into an act of devotion.
The verse concludes with a beautiful promise: "And Allah loves those who excel in doing good." This is not merely a statement of fact but a divine declaration of love — the ultimate reward for those who perfect their worship and their dealings with creation.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear believer, see how merciful and just your Lord is! He does not punish you for what you did in ignorance, once you turn to Him with sincerity and commit to a life of righteousness. The door of repentance is always open, and the path of spiritual growth is always before you. Do not let your past hold you back — instead, let it propel you forward toward greater taqwa, deeper faith, and the beautiful station of Ihsan, where you become beloved to Allah Himself.
Strive today to be among the *muhsinīn* — those who perfect their prayers, their honesty, their kindness to parents, their care for the needy, and their dealings with all people. For when you reach this level, you are not just a servant of Allah; you are His beloved. And what greater honor could there be than that?
