Word Meanings:

  • Sayḥah (صَيْحَةً): A single, overwhelming shout or blast — here, the cry of the Angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) that struck the people of Thamūd.
  • Hashīm (هَشِيم): Dry, brittle, crushed plant matter — such as broken twigs and leaves that have withered and crumbled.
  • Al-Muḥtaẓir (الْمُحْتَظِر): One who builds a pen or enclosure (ḥaẓīrah) for his livestock, using thorny branches and dry wood to protect them from predators.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah — the Most High — tells us about the fate of the people of Thamūd, who rejected the message of their Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) and persisted in their arrogance and disbelief. After they had been given clear signs and still refused to believe, Allah sent upon them a single, terrifying blast — the cry of the Angel Jibrīl. It was not a prolonged punishment, nor a series of calamities; it was one single shout that struck them with such force that they perished instantly, all of them, without exception.

Allah then describes their end with a powerful and vivid image: they became like the dry, crushed remnants of branches and leaves that a shepherd gathers to build a pen for his sheep. Just as those brittle twigs are broken, scattered, and trampled underfoot — lifeless and worthless — so too did the once-mighty people of Thamūd become. Their strength, their buildings, their pride — all turned to dust in a moment. The very thing they relied upon for protection and security became their likeness: fragile, shattered, and utterly destroyed.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every generation. It reminds us that no power, no wealth, and no position can shield a person from the decree of Allah when His punishment arrives. The people of Thamūd were known for their immense strength and their ability to carve homes out of mountains — yet that strength did not benefit them at all when the command of their Lord came. A single cry was enough to erase them from existence.

A Call to Reflection:

How easy it is for us to feel self-sufficient, to rely on our own abilities, our resources, and our plans — forgetting that the One who created us holds absolute power over us. This verse invites us to turn back to Allah with humility and sincerity, to submit to His commands, and to never delay our repentance. For if a single shout could wipe out an entire nation, then how much more should we fear the punishment of Allah and how much more should we cherish His mercy? The same Allah who destroyed them with one cry is the One who opens the doors of forgiveness for those who seek Him. Let us not be like those who only learn when it is too late — but rather, let us be among those who hear the message of the Qur’an and respond with faith and obedience, before the inevitable hour arrives.
