Surah Al-Qamar — Verse 30

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as a powerful rhetorical question addressed to the Quraysh of Makkah and to all who hear it thereafter. Allah is saying: "So how was My punishment and My warnings?"

The context is the story of the people of Thamud, who were given the she-camel as a sign from Allah, yet they rejected it, disbelieved, and ultimately killed it. When they did so, they challenged their prophet, Salih (peace be upon him), to bring the punishment he had promised. And Allah did exactly that—He seized them with a single, overwhelming blast, and they became like dry, broken twigs scattered in a pen.

So Allah turns to the disbelievers of Makkah and to humanity at large and asks: "How was My punishment and My warnings?" It is a question that carries within it the answer: it was severe, just, and absolutely true. Every warning Allah gave through His prophets came to pass exactly as promised. The punishment was not merely a threat—it was a reality that befell those who persisted in arrogance and transgression.

This verse is both a lesson and a reminder. It tells us that Allah’s warnings are never empty words. When He warns, He fulfills. And when He punishes, His punishment is unmatched in its severity and justice. The people of Thamud, with all their strength and skill in carving mountains into homes, could not protect themselves from the decree of Allah. Their power, their wealth, and their numbers meant nothing when the command of their Lord came.

Repent sincerely, hold fast to His guidance, and be among those who take His warnings seriously. For the one who heeds the warning before it arrives is saved, but the one who waits until the punishment comes will find no escape.

And know that Allah’s mercy is greater than His punishment. He does not wish to destroy you—He wishes to guide you. The very fact that you are reading this verse today is a sign that He wants good for you. So respond to His call, submit to His will, and taste the sweetness of faith that comes with trusting His promises—both the warnings and the glad tidings.
