Word Meanings:

  • Al-Bayān (البيان): Clear expression, articulation, and the ability to convey what is in one's mind—whether through speech, writing, or other means of communication. It encompasses clarity of tongue and pen.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning that He created man, Allah (Glorified be He) states that He taught him al-bayān—the faculty of clear expression. This is a distinct honor bestowed upon the human being, setting him apart from all other creatures. Through this gift, man can articulate his thoughts, feelings, needs, and intentions with precision and clarity, whether by spoken words or written script. Some scholars also include in this the teaching of the names of all things, as mentioned in the verse: *"And He taught Adam the names of all things"* (Al-Baqarah: 31), which is the foundation of language and communication.

This divine teaching is not merely the physical ability to produce sounds or write symbols; it is the profound capacity to organize thoughts, form concepts, and share them with others in a structured and meaningful way. It is the bridge that connects hearts and minds, enabling societies to build civilizations, exchange knowledge, and preserve wisdom across generations.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Ponder, dear reader, upon this magnificent favor from your Lord. The very words you speak, the sentences you write, the questions you ask, and the prayers you raise—all are gifts from the Most Merciful. He did not create you and leave you in confusion; rather, He equipped you with the most powerful tool of expression, enabling you to know Him, call upon Him, and convey His message. This ability to speak and write is a trust from Allah—use it to glorify His name, spread goodness, and guide others to the path of peace. Let your tongue be moist with His remembrance, and your pen be a witness for truth, for the One who taught you to speak is the One who hears every word you utter. Thank Him by using this gift in ways that please Him, and you will find that He multiplies His blessings upon you beyond measure.
