Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ālā’ (آلاء): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
  • Tukadhdhibān (تُكَذِّبَانِ): You both deny or reject (addressed to both humans and jinn).

Tafsir (Explanation):

O mankind and jinn, Allah—the Most Merciful—turns to you with a question that pierces the heart and awakens the soul: "Which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?" This verse is a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, repeated to emphasize that every blessing you enjoy—your very existence, your breath, your sight, your hearing, the earth beneath your feet, the sky above your head, the sun and moon, the fruits and rivers, and above all, the gift of Islam and the Qur’an—is a favor from your Lord that deserves gratitude, not denial.

The address to "both of you" includes humans and jinn, for both are accountable for their deeds and both are surrounded by Allah’s mercy. The question is rhetorical, meant to make you reflect: Can you truly deny any of these blessings? Can you claim that they came from anyone other than Allah? The answer is clear—no one can deny them except the arrogant and the heedless.

This verse is a call to gratitude. Every time you use your eyes to see, your ears to hear, your hands to work, you are living in the ocean of Allah’s favors. The One who grants you these blessings is the One who deserves your worship, your obedience, and your love. He does not need your gratitude, but you need His mercy.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and look around you. The air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat, the family you love, the faith that guides you—all are from your Lord. How can a heart that recognizes these blessings ever turn away from its Creator? How can a tongue that tastes His provision use it to deny His signs? The verse invites you to count His blessings, and you will find them too numerous to count. Let this realization draw you closer to Allah, fill your heart with gratitude, and lead you to submit to Him with sincerity. For the One who blessed you with all this is the One who deserves your thanks, your praise, and your devotion. Do not be among those who see the blessings but deny the Giver. Be among the grateful, and you will find His mercy and love surrounding you in this life and the next.
