Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mujrimūn (المجرمون): The criminals, the wicked, those who persisted in sin and disbelief.
  • Sīmāhum (سيماهم): Their distinguishing marks or signs.
  • Al-Nawāṣī (النواصي): The forelocks — the front parts of the head/hair.
  • Al-Aqdām (الأقدام): The feet.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, the criminals will not need to be identified through lengthy trials or testimonies — their very appearance will betray them. Allah has stamped upon their faces the mark of their crimes: their faces will be darkened with disgrace, and their eyes will appear bluish-black from the terror and shame of what they have done. This is their "sīmā" — their unmistakable sign that separates them from the believers, whose faces will be radiant and bright.

Once identified, the angels of punishment will seize them with absolute power and humiliation. They will be grabbed by their forelocks and their feet — bound together, front and back — and then hurled into the blazing Fire. This manner of seizure is not random; it is a deliberate act of degradation. The very parts of the body that once led them to sin — the head that plotted evil and the feet that carried them to disobedience — are now bound together as a sign of their utter helplessness before the might of Allah.

This verse carries a profound lesson for us all. No matter how hidden a person's sins may be in this world, nothing escapes Allah's knowledge. The criminals may have deceived people, worn masks of piety, or enjoyed their transgressions in secret — but on that Day, their true state will be exposed for all to see. There will be no masks, no excuses, and no escape.

Yet — and this is the beauty of Allah's mercy — the door of repentance is wide open right now, in this life. The very same forelocks and feet that could lead a person to destruction can instead be used to bow in prostration to Allah, to walk toward good deeds, and to seek His forgiveness. The criminals of today are not doomed forever; if they turn back to Allah with sincere hearts, He will erase their sins and transform their marks of disgrace into marks of honor.

So let this verse be a wake-up call. Look at your own life — where are your feet taking you? What is your mind plotting? Are you building a "sīmā" of light for the Day of Judgment, or one of darkness? Choose now, before that Day arrives when choices will no longer matter, and when the angels will seize the criminals by their forelocks and feet, not out of cruelty, but as the just consequence of what their own hands had sent forth.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Ar-Rahman

Then on that Day none will be asked about his sin among men or jinn.
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
The criminals will be known by their marks, and they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet.
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
This is Hell, which the criminals deny.
