Word Meanings:

  • آلَاء (Ālā’): Blessings, favors, and bounties.
  • رَبِّكُمَا (Rabbikumā): Your Lord — addressed to both humankind and jinn.
  • تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a powerful rhetorical question addressed to both humans and jinn — the two creations endowed with intellect and free will. Allah, in His infinite mercy, repeats this question multiple times throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, each time after mentioning a different set of His countless blessings. The question is not asked because Allah needs an answer; rather, it is a profound reminder that awakens the conscience.

The meaning is: "So which of the countless blessings of your Lord — O humans and jinn — do you both deny?"

The verse challenges both creations to reflect deeply. When you look at the universe around you — the sun and moon moving in perfect order, the sky raised above you, the earth spread beneath your feet, the fruits and provisions that sustain you, the very breath in your lungs — can you truly claim any of these are from anyone other than Allah? Can you deny even one of them?

The repetition of this verse throughout the surah serves a beautiful purpose: it forces the listener to pause after every blessing mentioned and acknowledge it. It is as if Allah is saying: "Here is another favor I have given you — now, which one of these will you deny?" The only honest answer is: "None, O Lord. We acknowledge them all."

This verse also carries a gentle yet firm warning. If you deny these blessings and refuse to thank the One who granted them, you are not harming Allah in the least — you are only harming yourself. Gratitude opens the door to more blessings, while denial and ingratitude close that door.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader — whether you are human or jinn, believer or seeker of truth — pause for a moment. Count the blessings you enjoy right now: the air you breathe without effort, the heart that beats without your command, the eyes that see, the ears that hear, the mind that thinks. Every morsel of food, every sip of water, every moment of peace — all of these are from your Lord's boundless mercy.

Islam teaches us that gratitude is not merely a word on the tongue but a way of life. When you recognize the blessings of Allah, your heart naturally fills with love for Him, and that love translates into obedience and worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would stand in prayer at night until his feet swelled, and when asked why he worshipped so intensely, he replied: "Should I not be a grateful servant?"

So let this verse be a turning point in your life. Every time you read it, let it remind you to say: "We believe in You, O Lord, and we thank You for all Your blessings. We do not deny any of them." And let that acknowledgment lead you to live a life of obedience, kindness, and devotion — for the One who blessed you so generously deserves nothing less than your complete love and submission.
