Word Meanings:

  • Mudhāmmatān (مُدْهَامَّتَانِ): This is a descriptive term derived from the root "dahm" (دهم), which refers to intense darkness or blackness. In this context, it describes something that is deeply, richly green to the point of appearing almost black due to the extreme lushness and saturation of its color.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah describes the two gardens that await the righteous in Paradise. The word "Mudhāmmatān" tells us that these two gardens are of a profound, deep green color—so intensely verdant and flourishing that their greenness has reached the very peak of richness, appearing almost black to the eye. This is not a dull or faded green, but one that radiates life, freshness, and perfection. The gardens are saturated with moisture and vitality, symbolizing boundless beauty and abundance that no earthly garden can ever match.

This description comes right after Allah has mentioned the two gardens for those who fear standing before their Lord, and it emphasizes the sheer visual splendor and perfection of these paradisiacal abodes. The deep, almost black greenness conveys a sense of completeness and maturity—nothing is lacking, nothing is withered, and everything is in its most perfect state.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Imagine a garden so lush and vibrant that its greenness surpasses anything you have ever seen on this earth—so rich that it seems to absorb light itself. This is but a glimpse of what Allah has prepared for His righteous servants. The Quran paints this picture to stir within our hearts a longing for Paradise and to remind us that the fleeting pleasures of this world are nothing compared to the eternal bliss that awaits. Every time we read such verses, we are invited to pause and ask ourselves: Are we striving for these gardens? Are we living in a way that draws us closer to this eternal reward? Let this beautiful imagery be a motivation to increase in good deeds, to seek Allah's forgiveness, and to yearn for His mercy. For indeed, the gardens of Paradise are not distant dreams—they are the promised destination for those who believe and do righteous deeds. So let us race toward them with sincerity and devotion, and let us never tire of asking Allah to admit us into His eternal paradise.
