Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fidyah (فِدْيَةٌ): A ransom or compensation offered to save oneself from punishment or harm.
- Ma'wakum (مَأْوَاكُمْ): Your abode, refuge, or final dwelling place.
- Mawlakum (مَوْلَاكُمْ): Here it means "more deserving of you" or "your rightful companion" — i.e., the Fire is what truly claims you and suits you best.
- Al-Maseer (الْمَصِيرُ): The final destination or ultimate end.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that Day — the Day of Judgment — no ransom will be accepted from you, O hypocrites, to free yourselves from the punishment of Allah. Neither will any compensation be taken from those who openly disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger. All of you — hypocrites and disbelievers alike — will share the same fate: the Fire of Hell. That Fire is your true abode; it is more deserving of you than any other place, and you are more deserving of it because of your deeds. It will cling to you as a companion that never leaves. And how terrible is that final destination!
This verse strikes at the heart of a false hope that some people carry — the hope that on the Day of Judgment, they might be able to bargain, pay, or offer something in exchange for their freedom. But that Day is not a marketplace. No wealth, no status, no family connections, no worldly power will be of any use. The only currency that mattered was faith and righteous deeds — and that currency had to be earned in this life, before death arrives.
The address here is primarily to the hypocrites — those who outwardly claimed faith but inwardly concealed disbelief. They thought they could deceive Allah as they deceived the believers in this world. But on that Day, their secret will be exposed, and they will stand shoulder to shoulder with the open disbelievers, receiving the same punishment. There is no third category, no middle ground, no escape route.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a warning for the hypocrites of the past — it is a timeless reminder for every soul. The door of repentance is open right now, in this very moment. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Allah accepts the repentance of His servant as long as the soul has not reached the throat." So do not delay. Do not assume you have time. Do not think that some worldly compensation or good deeds done for show will save you.
The Fire is described here as your "mawla" — your companion and master. This is a terrifying image: imagine being tied to a companion that never leaves your side, and that companion is a blazing fire. But equally, imagine the opposite: if you turn to Allah sincerely, the Qur'an tells us that Allah Himself becomes your Protector and Friend. He says: "Allah is the Ally of those who believe; He brings them out of darknesses into the light" (2:257). Which companion would you choose? The Fire, or the Most Merciful?
Today, while you still breathe, you have the chance to change your ending. One sincere prayer, one act of charity, one step toward Allah — and He will come running to you. Do not let this moment pass. Your final destination is being written by your choices right now. Choose wisely.
