Word Meanings:

  • Līnah (لينة): A palm tree, specifically referring to the date-palm. Some scholars also include any type of palm tree in this term.
  • Uṣūlihā (أصولها): Its roots or trunks — meaning the tree left standing firmly on its base.
  • Fāsiqīn (الفاسقين): Those who defiantly disobey Allah's commands, breaking His covenant — here referring to the treacherous Jewish tribe of Banu an-Naḍīr.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse was revealed during the expedition against the Jewish tribe of Banu an-Naḍīr, who had broken their treaty with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and plotted treachery against the Muslims. When the believers laid siege to their fortresses, some Muslims cut down the enemy's palm trees to weaken their morale and force their surrender, while others refrained, feeling hesitant or guilty about destroying property.

Allah, the Most Merciful, addressed this concern directly, reassuring the believers: "Whatever palm trees you cut down, O believers, or left standing upright on their trunks — it was all by Allah's permission and command." This means there was no sin or blame upon them for either action. The cutting was not an act of corruption or wanton destruction, as the enemy falsely claimed; rather, it was a legitimate military strategy sanctioned by divine will.

The verse concludes with the divine wisdom behind this permission: "And [it was done] so that Allah might disgrace the defiantly disobedient." By enabling the believers to cut down the enemy's prized palm trees — their source of pride and sustenance — Allah humiliated the Banu an-Naḍīr, who had chosen treachery over loyalty, and broken their covenant despite being people of scripture who should have upheld their promises.

This verse teaches us profound lessons. It shows that when believers act in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, even actions that may seem harsh or destructive in warfare become acts of worship, guided by divine wisdom. It also demonstrates Allah's complete sovereignty — nothing happens except by His will and permission. The believer's heart finds peace in knowing that every action taken in accordance with Allah's command carries blessing, even when the wisdom behind it is not immediately apparent.

Moreover, this verse highlights the importance of intention. The Muslims did not cut the trees out of spite or love of destruction, but as a strategic necessity to end the siege and protect the Muslim community. This distinguishes their action from mere vandalism. As believers today, we learn that our actions are judged by their intentions and by their compliance with Allah's guidance — and that when we submit to His will, He turns even difficult circumstances into means of elevating His religion and humiliating those who oppose His truth.

How beautiful is this religion, which guides its followers even in the heat of battle, teaching them to remain conscious of Allah, to seek His permission in all matters, and to trust that His wisdom encompasses every affair. Indeed, Allah never abandons His believing servants, and He always grants them victory over those who break their promises and persist in transgression.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Al-Hashr

And if not that Allah had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.
That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah - then indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks - it was by permission of Allah and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient.
And what Allah restored [of property] to His Messenger from them - you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels, but Allah gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.
And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
