Word Meanings:
- Shāqqū (شَاقُّوا): Derived from the root meaning "to be on one side" (shiq), it signifies opposition, enmity, and deliberate confrontation. It means to place oneself in a position of hostility against another, as if standing on the opposite side of a divide.
- Shadīd al-ʿiqāb (شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ): Severe in punishment; intense and overwhelming in retribution.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals the underlying cause of the punishment that befell the Jewish tribes of Banu Nadir, who were exiled from Medina for their treachery and betrayal of the covenant with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Their expulsion and the disgrace they suffered in this world, along with the torment awaiting them in the Hereafter, were direct consequences of their persistent opposition to Allah and His Messenger.
The word "mushāqqah" (opposition) paints a vivid picture: it describes people who placed themselves on the opposite side of a divide from Allah and His Messenger, actively working against the divine command rather than submitting to it. They broke their treaties, plotted against the Muslim community, and even conspired to assassinate the Prophet—all acts of open hostility and defiance.
The verse then delivers a universal warning that extends far beyond that specific historical incident: "And whoever opposes Allah—indeed, Allah is severe in punishment." This is not a threat directed at one group alone; it is a timeless principle. Anyone, in any era, who chooses the path of enmity toward Allah and His Messenger—whether through outright rejection, hypocrisy, or persistent disobedience—should know that Allah's justice is absolute and His punishment is not to be taken lightly.
Yet, within this stern warning lies a profound mercy. Allah does not conceal His boundaries; He has clearly explained what pleases Him and what incurs His wrath. The punishment is "severe" precisely because the warning was clear, the guidance was accessible, and the opportunity for repentance was open until the very last moment. Those who still choose opposition do so with full knowledge, and thus they bear full responsibility.
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine justice: Allah does not punish out of cruelty, but out of perfect wisdom. He is slow to anger, quick to forgive, and His punishment only falls upon those who persist in transgression after repeated invitations to return. Let this verse be a reminder that no power, no wealth, and no alliance can shield a person from the consequences of opposing their Creator. But equally, let it be a source of hope—for the door of repentance remains open, and the same Allah who is severe in punishment is also the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving, ready to accept anyone who turns back to Him with a sincere heart.
