Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Waddū (وَدُّوا): They wished and desired intensely.
  • Tud'hinu (تُدْهِنُ): You compromise, flatter, or show leniency in matters of religion to appease others.
  • Yud'hinoon (يُدْهِنُونَ): They would then soften toward you, reciprocate your leniency, and stop their hostility.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals the deep desire of the disbelievers to see the Prophet (peace be upon him) compromise even slightly in his faith. They wished and hoped that he would soften his stance, flatter them, and make concessions in religious matters—such as acknowledging their idols or tolerating their false beliefs—so that they, in turn, would soften their opposition, cease their mockery, and show him a degree of acceptance.

The verse exposes their true intention: they were not seeking genuine reconciliation or truth, but rather a trade-off—your religion for their approval. They wanted the Prophet to bend his principles, and in return, they would ease their attacks. This was a test of his steadfastness, and the verse serves as a clear warning against any form of compromise in matters of faith.

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. The enemies of truth have always sought to weaken the message by inviting its carriers to "meet halfway"—to dilute the purity of Islam for the sake of social harmony or worldly gain. Yet, the Quran firmly instructs us that faith is not a bargaining chip. When we stand firm on the truth, Allah honors us with His support, and no amount of pressure or flattery should ever move us from the path of righteousness. The disbelievers' wish to see you soften is, in itself, proof that your steadfastness is a source of strength. So hold on to your principles with pride, for the sweetness of faith far outweighs the fleeting approval of people. And remember: when you remain unshaken, Allah Himself becomes your protector, and His promise of victory is certain.
