Word Meanings:

  • حَلَّافٍ (Hallaf): One who swears excessively, frequently taking oaths, especially false or unnecessary ones.
  • مَهِين (Mahin): Despicable, contemptible, weak in character and intellect, of little worth or substance.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a direct and emphatic command: "And do not obey every despicable swearer." This is a divine instruction that carries profound wisdom for all believers until the end of time.

The verse warns against following or yielding to a specific type of person — one who habitually swears oaths, using them as a tool to deceive and manipulate others. Such a person swears by Allah frequently, not out of reverence, but to lend false credibility to their words and to conceal their dishonesty. Their oaths are a shield for their corruption.

The term "مَهِين" describes this individual as contemptible and weak — weak in intellect, weak in moral character, and devoid of sound judgment. This person lacks the dignity of truthfulness and the strength of integrity. Despite their outward claims, they are inwardly hollow and despicable.

This verse was revealed in the context of the polytheists of Makkah, particularly referring to al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah, who possessed wealth and children, yet used his resources to oppose the truth and spread falsehood. When the verses of the Quran were recited to him, he arrogantly dismissed them as "tales of the ancients."

However, the lesson extends far beyond that specific historical context. It serves as a timeless warning to every Muslim: be cautious of those who habitually swear, who are contemptible in character, and who use oaths as a means to deceive. Do not be swayed by their eloquence, their wealth, or their social standing. Their outward appearance may be impressive, but their inner reality is despicable.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, this verse teaches us a beautiful principle: the believer's word should be truthful and trustworthy without needing excessive oaths. When you are known for your honesty, your simple word suffices. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was known as "al-Amin" (the trustworthy) even before his prophethood — his character spoke louder than any oath.

Let this verse inspire you to be a person of integrity, whose word is as good as their bond. And let it also serve as a protective shield — so that you may never be misled by those who swear excessively, for their oaths often mask their falsehood. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this guidance to safeguard our faith, our wealth, and our lives from the harm of such individuals.

May Allah grant us the wisdom to recognize truth and the strength to follow it, and may He protect us from the company of the despicable and the deceitful.
