Surah Al-A'raf — Verse 145

• Al-Alwah (الأَلْوَاح): The tablets or inscribed plates upon which the Law was written.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of His immense favour upon Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel. Allah inscribed for Musa upon the Tablets—whether of wood, stone, or another substance—guidance covering every aspect of life: commands and prohibitions, matters of worship and daily dealings, stories of the past, and tidings of what was to come. These Tablets served a dual purpose: they were a *maw‘iẓah*—a profound admonition to awaken hearts, deter from sin, and inspire reflection—and a *tafṣīl*—a detailed clarification of all that the people needed for their religion and their worldly affairs.

Then Allah commanded Musa: "Take it with strength"—meaning, receive these Tablets with utmost seriousness, resolve, and diligence, and act upon them with complete dedication. And He instructed him further: "And command your people to take the best of it." This is a beautiful call to excellence—not merely to obey, but to choose the noblest and most virtuous path within the Law. For instance, when retaliation is permitted, forgiveness is better; when justice allows punishment, patience and pardon are superior. The believer is urged to rise above the minimum requirement and embrace the higher standard of character and mercy.

Finally, Allah declares: "I will show you the abode of the defiantly disobedient." This is both a warning and a promise. It points to the fate of Pharaoh and his people, whose dwellings were left in ruin as a sign for those who reflect. It also foreshadows the ultimate abode of all who rebel against Allah—the Fire prepared for the transgressors. The verse thus carries a profound lesson: the end of sin is destruction, while the end of obedience is honour and success.

Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse is a treasure of guidance for every believer. It teaches us that divine revelation is not a burden but a mercy—a complete manual for life, covering both the spiritual and the practical. The command to take it "with strength" reminds us that our relationship with the Qur’an and the Sunnah must never be casual or half-hearted. We are called to engage with Allah’s guidance with energy, sincerity, and perseverance.

Moreover, the instruction to "take the best of it" elevates our daily conduct. Islam does not merely ask us to do what is lawful; it invites us to excel in virtue—to forgive when we could retaliate, to be patient when we could react, to give when we could withhold. This is the path of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said: *"I have been sent to perfect noble character."*

And the closing warning—*"I will show you the abode of the defiantly disobedient"*—is a call to reflect on history. Where are the tyrants and oppressors of the past? Their palaces have crumbled, their power has vanished, and their legacy is one of ruin. But the believers who held fast to Allah’s guidance have left a legacy of light. So let us seize this glorious Qur’an with firm resolve, live by its best teachings, and strive for the eternal abode of peace—Jannah—where no sorrow or fear shall ever touch us.
