📖 English Meaning
I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them.

Word Meanings:

  • "Asrif" (سَأَصْرِفُ): I will turn away or divert — meaning, I will withhold and prevent.
  • "Yatakabbarūn" (يَتَكَبَّرُونَ): Those who behave arrogantly and with pride.
  • "Sabīl al-Rushd" (سَبِيلَ الرُّشْدِ): The path of right guidance, righteousness, and success.
  • "Sabīl al-Ghayy" (سَبِيلَ الْغَيِّ): The path of error, misguidance, and ruin.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah the Almighty declares that He will turn away from His signs — the ability to understand, reflect upon, and benefit from His revelations and proofs — those who are arrogant upon the earth without any right. These are people who exalt themselves above others and above the truth, refusing to submit to their Lord. Their arrogance is not based on any genuine merit; it is pure vanity and rebellion.

Because of this pride, their hearts become sealed. Even if they witness every kind of miracle, sign, or proof, they will not believe in it. Their eyes see, but their hearts remain blind, for they have chosen obstinacy over truth. When they see the path of guidance that leads to Allah's pleasure and to success in this life and the Hereafter, they do not take it as their way. They turn away from it with disdain. But when they see the path of error and misguidance that leads to destruction, they embrace it wholeheartedly and follow it eagerly.

This is not an arbitrary punishment — it is the natural consequence of their own choices. They rejected Allah's signs and were heedless of them, never pausing to reflect on their meaning or to contemplate the wisdom behind them. Their arrogance and negligence became the very barrier that cut them off from divine guidance.

A Call to Reflection and Humility:

Dear reader, this verse carries a profound warning and a precious lesson. It teaches us that the heart's ability to receive guidance is a gift from Allah, and that this gift is protected by humility and sincerity. When a person is humble before Allah and His creation, Allah opens their heart to understanding and faith. But when a person is filled with pride — feeling that they are above the truth, above the prophets, above the commandments of Allah — then Allah leaves them to their own devices, and their hearts become locked against the very light that could save them.

Let us examine our own hearts. Do we approach the Qur'an with humility, seeking to understand and obey? Or do we approach it with arrogance, picking and choosing what suits our desires? Do we welcome the truth wherever we find it, or do we turn away when it challenges our egos?

The path of guidance is clear and straight, but it requires a humble heart to walk upon it. The path of misguidance is wide and alluring, and it is easy to slip into it when we rely on our own pride. May Allah protect us from arrogance and heedlessness, and may He open our hearts to the light of His signs, making us among those who see the path of right guidance and follow it, and who see the path of error and avoid it. Indeed, He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, and He never turns away a sincere heart that seeks Him.

📜 Verse 144-148 — Al-A'raf

[Allah] said, "O Moses, I have chosen you over the people with My messages and My words [to you]. So take what I have given you and be among the grateful."
And We wrote for him on the tablets [something] of all things - instruction and explanation for all things, [saying], "Take them with determination and order your people to take the best of it. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient."
Those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter - their deeds have become worthless. Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?
And the people of Moses made, after [his departure], from their ornaments a calf - an image having a lowing sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to a way? They took it [for worship], and they were wrongdoers.
