Tafsir (Explanation):
Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) chose seventy of the most honorable and virtuous men from his people, as Allah had appointed a set time and place for them to come and offer repentance for the sin committed by the foolish among the Children of Israel—the worship of the golden calf. They set out to the appointed meeting place at Mount Sinai, hoping to seek forgiveness and renew their covenant with Allah.
However, upon their arrival, the arrogance of some of them got the better of them. They said to Musa: "We will not believe you until we see Allah openly with our own eyes!" This was a grave transgression and an audacious demand. Consequently, a violent earthquake seized them—a severe tremor that struck terror into their hearts and caused them to perish on the spot.
At that devastating moment, Musa (peace be upon him) turned to his Lord in humble supplication, his heart heavy with grief and compassion. He pleaded: "My Lord, if You had willed, You could have destroyed them before this, and me with them. Would You destroy us for what the foolish among us have done?" His words reflect the deep mercy of a prophet who loved his people and feared returning to them with the news that their best men had perished.
Musa then acknowledged the divine wisdom behind what had occurred, saying: "This is nothing but Your trial—You cause to stray thereby whom You will, and You guide whom You will." He recognized that the entire incident—including their audacious demand to see Allah—was a test from Allah to distinguish the sincere from the insolent. Allah's decree is absolute; He guides whom He wills out of His wisdom and lets stray whom He wills out of His justice.
Finally, Musa concluded his supplication with the most beautiful words of reliance and hope: "You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, for You are the Best of those who forgive." He sought forgiveness not only for the seventy who perished but for the entire nation, acknowledging that Allah alone is the Guardian of His servants, and that His mercy encompasses all.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This profound verse teaches us several timeless lessons. First, it shows us the immense mercy and compassion of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), who, even in the face of his people's grave sin, did not abandon them but interceded for them with heartfelt du'a. This is the character of the believers—they are merciful to one another and never despair of Allah's mercy.
Second, we learn that trials and afflictions are part of Allah's divine wisdom. When hardships befall us, they are not random; they are opportunities for purification, reflection, and drawing closer to Allah. The believer understands that every test is a means of elevation, and that Allah's wisdom surpasses our limited understanding.
Third, the verse beautifully demonstrates the etiquette of supplication. Musa (peace be upon him) began by acknowledging Allah's absolute will and power, then expressed his own helplessness, and finally sought forgiveness and mercy. This is the perfect model for us: humble ourselves before Allah, acknowledge His sovereignty, and ask Him with sincerity and hope.
Dear reader, whenever you face trials in your life, remember the words of Musa: "You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy upon us." Turn to Allah with a humble heart, for He is the Best of those who forgive, and His mercy encompasses everything. No sin is too great to be forgiven, and no trial is too heavy to be lifted when you place your trust in the Most Merciful.
